Fools
The Temper Trap Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The don't know
What they're on about
Those fools
Don't get my dreams
And I want it, I want it, I want it
And I want it, I want it, I want it
When you can't wait
To watch me fall
High
Singin' stories on a wrecking ball
Colliding fast
To bring you down
If you want it, you want it, you want it
If you want it, you want it, you want it
All
Sometimes
Things we build
To fall
And I want it, I want it, I want it
And I want it, I want it, I want it
All
And I want it, I want it, I want it
And I want it, I want it, I want it
All
The lyrics of The Temper Trap's song Fools convey a sense of frustration and determination. The persona in the song seems to be facing naysayers who don't understand or appreciate their goals and dreams. The opening lines suggest that these "fools" lack insight and therefore cannot comprehend the persona's aspirations. The repeated phrase "And I want it, I want it, I want it" highlights the persona's strong desire for success and their refusal to be deterred by others' doubts. The following lines, "When you can't wait to watch me fall," suggest that there are people actively rooting for the persona's failure. Despite this opposition, the persona remains "high" and continues to pursue their goals with zeal.
The image of "Singin' stories on a wrecking ball" is intriguing and suggests a certain recklessness or daringness. The persona seems to be deliberately taking risks in pursuit of their dreams, even if it means "colliding fast to bring you down." The guitar-heavy instrumental that follows this line adds to the sense of urgency and danger in the song. The final lines of the chorus, "Sometimes things we build to fall," convey a sense of fatalism or resignation. The persona is aware that their dreams come with risks and that failure is always a possibility. However, they are still determined to try.
Overall, Fools is a song about determination in the face of opposition. The persona refuses to be discouraged by those who doubt them and is willing to take risks in pursuit of their dreams. The repeated phrase "And I want it, I want it, I want it" reinforces their strong desire for success, even if it means potentially falling.
