Where Do We Go From Here
The Temper Trap Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A pretty picture paints a thousand words
I'll look at yours today
It's been a while, the dust has long set in
You still look the same

So, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?

Years have gone and time has healed

You words were casual but longing for
For me or someone else
What could have driven you to think of all
I let go with much tears

So, where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
How do I know what's real?
Where do we go from here?

Years have gone and time has healed
Tell me now, just how to feel

Where do we go when all the roads are under
Where do we go, so many chances pass us by
Where do we go, what now when I am married, oh
But don't go, how can I let you in

Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from,
Where do we go from here?

Where do we go from here?
Where do we go from here?

Where do we go from,
Where do we go from here?

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song by The Temper Trap are about the confusion and uncertainty that comes with the end of a relationship. The singer of the song is looking at a picture of their former partner, reflecting on how time has passed but their feelings have not changed. They are wondering where to go next now that the relationship has ended, and questioning what is real and what could have led their former partner to think about them.

The chorus of the song repeats the question "Where do we go from here?" which emphasizes the confusion and lack of direction the singer is feeling. They are lost and unsure of what steps to take next. The song even touches on the complexity of relationships in general, as it wonders if the road ahead will be blocked or if opportunities will pass by.

Overall, the song has a melancholic feel, invoking deep emotions and exploring the aftermath of love and loss. It prompts the listener to consider their own experiences with relationships and the challenges that arise when they come to an end.

The Blunt Truth's Haymaker

Always reminds me of a woman I've known since we were kids. We grew up as best friends, were in other relationships but we kept going back to each other for comfort. We always had a sexual relationship, even in our teenage yrs, but it was more than just sex. We were best friends. We were soul mates. A few years ago we had a major falling out and haven't spoken since. I'm now married, love my wife, but this song always reminds me of this person I knew for so long. I still think of her often. Sometimes when I hear this song I close my eyes and visualise meeting her again. I believe it's just closure I need as I love my wife dearly and I'm not a paramour, but my soul still feels unsettled.
