The band evolved into a nine-piece ensemble with a light-hearted and humorous performing style.
The name "Temperance Seven" is a subtle play on words: the number seven being "one under the eight". That there were nine members or "one over the eight" implied intemperance.
They have links to Monty Python and the Rolling Stones.

Joan Cuthill Glad you enjoyed this classic from The Temperance Seven Jan,they had a few more hits like this in the 60's,not sure if they made number 1 again though !...Enjoy your weekend !

Thanks, Mick, for sharing a very nostalgic song and a unique video! If I'm not mistaken, this song was on the HMV's Golden Greats album, which was one of the first LPs that I bought from England by "surface mail"! I guess it was like Uptown Funk of the early 60's, because both songs are throwbacks to earlier days. These 60's UK #1 hits are really great, because it's one quality song after the other! Please keep up the good work!!

i5705b5705j5705j Hiya,I'm pleased to see you've looked up the history of this song, that's saved me a job lol...Glad you liked the video,it's a bit of a mixture of things really,I wasn't sure how to approach this one !....I'm going to continue for a little while longer with the #1's from the 60's,I'll probably stop when I reach 50 and then have a break for a while......Enjoy your weekend !!
