The band evolved into a nine-piece ensemble with a light-hearted and humorous performing style.
The name "Temperance Seven" is a subtle play on words: the number seven being "one under the eight". That there were nine members or "one over the eight" implied intemperance.
They have links to Monty Python and the Rolling Stones.

the original had 9 members ? answer, they were one over the eight when they named the group, and the singer didn't use a mike, he had a voice cone, as used by a boating cox to call the stroke to the oarsmen
