I've Been Good To You
The Temptations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Look what you've done

You made a fool out of someone

(Out of someone)

You thought love was true
And found out that you were just having fun

(Just having fun)

And oh, why do you wanna make me blue?

After all, I've been good to you

(I've been good to you)

Oh, yes I have

And I recall the time

You needed somebody and I made you mine

You needed a friend

So I took you in and treated you so kind

And oh, why do you wanna make me blue?

After after all, I've been good to you

(I've been good to you)

Oh, yes I have

And you know I've always been around

And I never, never, never let you down

And now you're telling me that you must go

You know that you're hurting me so

But there, there come a time

One day, one day, one day you gonna wake up and find

You'll come back to me on your bending knee

And you're gonna be crying

And oh, believe me, what I say it true, baby

After all, Lord I've been good to you

(I've been good to you)

Everyday and every way

(I've been good to you)

You know, you know, you know, baby

I've been so good

(I've been good to you)

Overall Meaning

The Temptationsโ€™ โ€œIโ€™ve Been Good to Youโ€ is a song about heartbreak and betrayal. The lyrics describe a romantic relationship where one person has taken the other for granted, despite the other person being supportive, caring, and faithful. The song captures the betrayal, hurt, and disappointment felt by the person who has been let down. The lyrics emphasize the sacrifices made and the care given, but still, the partner chooses to leave without any remorse.

The song starts with a sad tone, โ€œLook what youโ€™ve done, you made a fool out of someoneโ€ฆโ€ It is clear that the singer trusted and believed in their partner, only to be disappointed in the end. Later in the song, the singer reminisces about the moments when they were there for the partner, saying, โ€œYou needed somebody and I made you mine... So I took you in and treated you so kind.โ€ The lyrics are honest, raw, and emotional. The singer laments the fact that after being so good to the partner, they have been left alone.

Moreover, the lyrics also suggest that the partner may eventually regret leaving their loving partner. The lines โ€œOne day, one day, one day you gonna wake up and find, You'll come back to me on your bending kneeโ€ indicate that the partner will eventually recognize their mistake, but it will be too late. The singer emphasizes that despite what happens, they will always be there for their partner.

Eddie is singing the blues in this song. He mastered the falsetto like no other. The background vocals are amazing as usual. Melvin is growling making the harmonies more pure with Otis, Paul and David in the middle. Itโ€™s like The Temptations are the only male vocal group whose backgrounds are just as famous. Keep pushing Otis! Resting to greatest voices ever Eddie, Paul, David, Dennis and Melvin. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

RC Thomas

@Nelson Robinson so enjoy and leave me out of it.

Nelson Robinson

@RC ThomasIโ€™m well aware Dennis wasnโ€™t in the group but that shouldnโ€™t stop me from honoring his memory. He was considered a member of the second โ€œClassic Fiveโ€.

Grayareas27

@RC Thomas And the original post names everyone in the song by name.

RC Thomas

@Grayareas27 Dennis was not a member then ... that is my point...

I LOVE THIS SONG SO MUCH .

Robert Boone

Great job by the coldest falsetto ever. Smokeys version is a high natural. Smoke is not a falsetto singer. His natural is higher ranged. I love both of them. Lets not pit one against the other. Lets just appreciate genius. Peace.
