I Heard It Through the Grapevine
The Temptations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I bet you're wonderin' how I knew

About your plans to make me blue

With some other guy, you knew before

Between the two of us guys
You know I love you more

It took me by surprise, I must say

When I found out yesterday

I heard it through the grapevine

Not much longer would you be mine

I heard it through the grapevine

An' I'm just about to lose my mind

I know a man ain't supposed to cry

But these tears, I can't hold inside

Losin' you would end my life, you see

'Cause you mean that much to me

You could have told me yourself

That you loved someone else

Instead, I heard it through the grapevine

Not much longer would you be mine

I heard it through the grapevine

An' I'm just about to lose my mind

People say believe half of what you see

An' none of what you hear

I just can't help bein' confused

If it is true, please tell me, dear

Do you plan to let me go

For the other guy you loved before?

Don't you know I heard it through the grapevine

Not much longer would you be mine

I heard it through the grapevine

I heard it through the grapevine

I heard it through the grapevine

I heard it through the grapevine

I heard it through the grapevine

I heard it through the grapevine

Overall Meaning

This song, written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and performed by The Temptations, is a tale of heartbreak and betrayal. The singer suspects that his lover is planning to leave him for another man, and the news comes as a complete shock to him. He pleads with her to be honest with him about her intentions and not to leave him, as she means everything to him. The song is full of raw emotion, from the singer's disbelief and hurt to his anger and confusion. The repetition of the phrase "I heard it through the grapevine" emphasizes the sense of betrayal and the indirect way in which the singer has learned of his lover's plans.

The use of the metaphor of the grapevine is interesting, as it suggests a kind of secret network of communication that exists outside of official channels. The grapevine is a powerful symbol of rumor and gossip, and the fact that the singer has heard this news through it suggests that it is not something that was meant for him to know. The line "people say believe half of what you see and none of what you hear" further emphasizes the idea that the singer cannot be certain of the truth of what he has been told. This creates a sense of tension and uncertainty throughout the song that is only resolved when the singer confronts his lover directly.

The Temptations can sing gospel or opera and still sound sensational! The greatest singing group of all time!

King Heff

YESSSSSSSSSS!

Sean Sherrod

The best part of this particular version is the breakdown at 1:52 sung by Eddie Kendricks, Otis Williams, and the greatest bass singer in the history of soul music Melvin Franklin.

D Rollins

Otis Williams? You mean Dennis, don't you?

Debra Stevenson

Lovin' Eddie at 1:52... I always really loved that part !!!

Classic Norman Whitfield production. The man was a genius.

AJ. McGowan

Their are several great versions of this song and I love them for different reasons. This version I love for the vocals, harmonies and the adlib. Such a shame it did not receive the proper recognition it deserved. In my opinion It was one of, it not, the best cut on the album...

James Robinson

What a beautiful blend of voices... harmony is impeccable..

Diddles Falk

The absolute best-nothing like it in 2020 etc. can absolutely compare - no video/tricks/dancing- just the best.

Another one of my favorites with James Jamerson on that bass. I love the way he play different lines btw the Marvin Gaye, Gladys Knight, and this one.
