masterpiece
The Temptations Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Where I was born ev'rything was dull and dingy
I lived in a place they called the inner city
Getting ahead huh was strictly a nono
'Cause nobody cares what happens to the folks
That live in the ghetto
Thousands of lives wasting away
People living from day to day
It's a challenge just staying alive
'Cause in the ghetto only the strong survive

Broken down homes, kids strung out
They don't even know what life's all about
Stealin' cars, robbin' bars
Mugging drugs, rat infested
And no one's interested

Kids dodging cars for recreation
Only adds to a mother's frustration
Breakings, folks comin' home
And finding all their possessions gone

Oh it's an ev'ry day thing, well well, in the ghetto
Oh it's an ev'ry day thing, well in the ghetto

Overall Meaning

The Temptations' song "Masterpiece" is a powerful commentary on the struggles of inner-city life. The opening lines describe a bleak existence where the singer grew up, where poverty and hopelessness are the norm. The inner city provides little opportunity for economic advancement, and residents face constant challenges to simply survive. Despite the harsh reality of living in the ghetto, the song asserts that those who manage to persevere and emerge stronger from their experiences can be considered true "masterpieces."

Throughout the song, The Temptations describe the grim realities of life in the ghetto, including drug addiction, crime, and the constant threat of violence. Parents worry about their children's safety, and many families struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Despite these challenges, the song emphasizes the resilience of the human spirit and the courage of those who continue to fight against overwhelming odds.

Masterpiece should be taught in music appreciation courses worldwide. The beauty of all the instruments speaking to each other ln such great harmony. The truth of the lyrics. It couldn't have been more appropriately named, Masterpiece.
