The trio was established in February 2000 during a series of concerts in Stockholm and a recording of Don Cherry-compositions that was released in Sweden by the label Crazy Wisdom/Universal. Melding German, British and American traditions of free music, their repertoire has later been collected from various sources such as James Blood Ulmer, Frank Lowe, PJ Harvey, White Stripes, Lightning Bolt and Joe McPhee. McPhee was also a participating musician on the "She Knows..." album (2001).
"Garage" was released on the Smalltown Superjazzz label in 2004. An EP of live material performed with Joe McPhee and Cato Salsa Experience was released in 2005, as well as a live album.
Life On Mars
The Thing Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
For she′s lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It's the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He′s in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
It′s on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow
Now the workers have struck for fame
′Cause Lennon's on sale again
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibeza to the Norfolk Broads
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns
But the film is a saddening bore
′Cause I wrote it ten times or more
It's about to be writ again
As I ask you to focus on
Sailors fighting in the dance hall
Oh man! Look at those cavemen go
It′s the freakiest show
Take a look at the Lawman
Beating up the wrong guy
Oh man! Wonder if he'll ever know
He's in the best selling show
Is there life on Mars?
The first verse of The Thing's song "Life On Mars" sets the stage for the song's ambiguous, surrealistic imagery. The song begins with the description of a small affair that the girl with mousy hair is experiencing. Her parents are against her, and her friend is not around. She walks through her sunken dream to find a seat with the clearest view, hooked to the silver screen. However, she finds the film to be a bore as she has lived it ten times or more. In this verse, the girl can be seen as someone trying to escape from reality; hence, she sought refuge in movies.
The second verse takes us on a journey through time and space. We see sailors fighting in the dance hall, cavemen, a lawman beating up the wrong guy, and Mickey Mouse grows up a cow. The images are vivid, surreal and are open to interpretation. The reference to Lennon on sale gives a hint of the song being written during the Beatles era. The verse ends with a call-back to the girl in the first verse, who is still struggling to find meaning in her life.
The chorus poses the most important question: Is there life on Mars? The question is open-ended and can be interpreted in various ways. The song's overall tone is melancholic, with lyrics that suggest a desire for something more significant than the mundane daily life. It is an ode to the human search for meaning and may be interpreted as a metaphor for the absurdity of life itself.

Imagine being a teen when Bowie first came on the scene, it was so mindblowing, there was no one else even remotely like him.
