Dragonfly
The Thorns Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dragonfly in a tidal waves
Eyes have come undone
Still the coastline's a mile away
And the storm's just begun

Here goes nothing
Heard him saying
As he buzzed away

Dragonfly sees the tops of the trees
From the see-130 door
Flips a bird, puts his knees in the breeze
And floats down to the war

Here goes nothing
Heard him saying
As he dropped away
Here goes nothing
Coming down
Hardly makes a sound

Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up
Cover it up, cover it up

Here goes nothing
Holy roller
Finally blew a fuse
Here goes nothing
Read all about it
In the front page news

Dragonfly makes a crown of thorns
For a savior yet to come

Still alive but his wings are torn
And his conscience has gone numb

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of “Dragonfly” by The Thorns, at face value, appear to describe a dragonfly caught in the midst of a storm or turbulence. The verses describe a situation where the dragonfly is fighting to survive and stay afloat amidst the raging waves, and yet remains stoic and determined. The metaphor of a stranded dragonfly is used to describe a person or a group facing immense adversity or life-changing circumstances.

The lines “Here goes nothing, heard him saying, as he buzzed away” and “Here goes nothing, coming down, hardly makes a sound” suggest that the dragonfly moves on in the face of adversity, without a care for the consequences, but with a strong sense of purpose. The bridge of the song, which repeats the words “Cover it up” several times, seems to suggest that sometimes it is important to ignore the wounds and scars that life inflicts on us, in order to move on.

The final verse, “Dragonfly makes a crown of thorns for his savior yet to come, still alive but his wings are torn, and his conscience has gone numb” is perhaps the most telling, as it refers to the concept of hope, belief and resilience even in the darkest of times. Just as the dragonfly believes in a savior who is yet to come, the song’s narrator suggests that there is always a hope for better times and that people should never give up.
