Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Three Degrees's song TSOP are simple and repetitive, consisting primarily of the words "Soul Train" and "People all over the world" repeated over and over again, along with some minor variations like "Let's get it on" and "It's time to get down." This repetition serves to drive home the central theme of the song, which is the unifying power of music and dance.

The repeated use of "Soul Train" serves as a nod to the popular American television show of the same name, which was dedicated to showcasing Black music and dance culture. The show was instrumental in breaking down racial barriers and creating a sense of community and celebration around Black art and creativity. What a piece of classic disco music that melted the charts in the early 70's. The addition of the Three Degrees gives the song an added appeal. I remember when this song came out, and it was all I could do from keep on humming the tune. Even after 40 years or more I still love this song. It does not come better than this.

I remember when I was little in the early 70s and the hairdresser putting big rollers in my mom's hair while this song was playing on the radio. Those were the good ol' days of vinyl records and the good music on the radio.
