Autumn Leaves
The Three Tenors Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The falling leaves drift by the window
The autumn leaves of red and gold
I see your lips, the summer kisses
The sun-burned hands I used to hold

Since you went away the days grow long
And soon I'll hear old winter's song
But I miss you most of all my darling
When autumn leaves start to fall

Overall Meaning

The Three Suns's song Autumn Leaves is a beautiful melody about the changing season and the loss of a loved one. The first stanza talks about how the falling leaves drift by the window bringing with it the autumnal colors of red and gold. The singer reminisces about the summer kisses and sunburned hands of the lover who is no longer there. The second stanza talks about how the days have grown longer since the lover's departure and how the cold winter will soon be upon them. The singer misses their lover the most during autumn when the leaves start to fall.

This is a significantly important recording! These guys are two of the very, very finest saxophonists - EVER!!!

@Frisbieinstein

They have great chemistry. They inspire one another.

@claydobbins9342

No doubt two of the greats, but I argue not two of the finest ever. That is dismissing a lot of players, Coltrane, George Coleman, Dexter Gordon, "Bird", just to mention a few, and then there is Stan Getz, Johnny Hodges, King Curtis...jazz officiandos know that Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins were great, but we're essentially copies/imitators of "Bird". ("Bird", Charles Christopher Parker aka Charlie Parker, who is considered the saint, The GOAT)

@PepperWilliamsMusic

I have this wonderful album! These are the days when you could actually tell a saxophone player from another. All original sounds on their "axe".

@SUPD100

Perfection. God, I love this kind of jazz. This just soothes my mind and massages the stress out.

@danrosati3779

Sonny is in left speaker and 2nd solo, Gene in right speaker and right speaker. WOW.....they were great!!!! They played great apart and even better together. This album is AWESOME!!!

@TheDavelombardo

Beautiful phrasing. One of the best versions recorded

@setarehgharavi3221

One of if not the best recording of this tune I’ve ever heard

Masterpiece

@boomerang905

Mr. Stitt was brilliant and Mr. Ammons was so down. I met them both within a year. Mr. Stitt sent me a drink because he couldn't honor my song request since another had performed the tune before l came in. He reminded me of a former Teacher of mine. Real strict but kind. One of the best times if my life. He and Mr. Ammons complemented each other. I noticed that about the great Mr. Stitt. He relaxed with some more than others.
