Our Wasted Lives
The Thrills Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
There's no romance in fate
You'll go far
Because all the one night stands
Could be within your hands
Here comes the hard sell from the top:
Felt emptier than a suburban swimming pool in the fall
Wait. I noticed today I've let years slip by. I don't know why.
It's not like I've got time on my side
It's not like I've got time on my side
Who will testify
For our wasted lives
Hey kids,
You've been type cast all your lives
but no more.
Guardian angels
should be ashamed of themselves
Here comes the hard sell from the top:
Lose faith in fate
and it might get better than we thought
This song reflects on the theme of wasted lives and missed opportunities. The opening line suggests that fate has no romance, and that the choices one makes can shape their destiny. The song encourages young people to be proactive in shaping their own future. The lyrics argue that the hedonistic and transient lifestyle of "one night stands" is ultimately unfulfilling, and that there is more to life than purely physical pleasure. The hard sell referred to in the song is a metaphor for a false sense of security and meaning, as represented by the idea of fate.
The second verse highlights the sense of urgency that comes with realizing that time is slipping away. The singer feels that they have let years pass them by without really knowing why. In the chorus, the singer acknowledges that time is not on their side and asks who will bear witness to their wasted lives. The bridge explores the idea that young people are often stereotyped and expected to conform to certain roles or labels. The singer challenges this notion and empowers young people to reject these labels and forge their own path. The final lines encourage individuals to lose faith in fate and take control of their own lives, accepting that the future may hold more promise than they once thought.
