Haunting Me
The Tiger Lillies Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
All you ever did was haunting me
With a shadow of a smile for a while
Haunting me
From the cradle to senility
Well, I shouldn't lie, should I
Sentimental violation of another child
Haunting me
Using and abusing me
Well, I would cry, I would cry
Haunting me
All you ever did was handle me
Do I testify your trials of denial?
Sentimental violation of another child
You're my very special friend
Why are you so wild?
Haunting me, haunting me
Haunting me, haunting me
Haunting me, haunting me
Haunting me, haunting me
The lyrics to The Tiger Lillies's song "Haunting Me" speak to the emotional effects of abuse and trauma. The repetition of the line "haunting me" emphasizes the lasting impact of the experience, which the singer cannot shake off. The abuser is described as having been present throughout the singer's life, from infancy ("From the cradle") to old age ("senility"), suggesting that the impact of abuse can be pervasive and long-lasting.
The line "sentimental violation of another child" is particularly poignant, as it highlights the fact that the abuser took advantage of the singer's vulnerability and emotional openness. The use of the word "sentimental" complicates the idea of violations, suggesting that the abuser was able to manipulate the singer's emotional connection to them in order to continue the abuse.
Overall, "Haunting Me" is a powerful and emotional song that highlights the long-lasting impact of abuse and the emotional complexities that can come with trauma.
