Teardrops
The Tiger Lillies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

No one hears your teardrops as they blow in the wind
No one sees your teardrops as the candles start to dim
No one ever holds you you lose and never win
The more they will not see you the more the state you're in

Teardrops

When your on your on your deathbed they might hold your hand
While they for their holiday they make their plans
No one wants the raindrops or your withered flesh
Only want you when you're young and smart and fresh

Teardrops

No one wants to know you when you're down and out
No one wants to hear it shut their ears and shout
So your teardrops they just blow in the wind
Your teardrops falling in you're mug of tin

Are blowing in the wind

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Tiger Lillies' song Teardrops paints a bleak and harrowing picture of society's treatment of the forgotten and downtrodden. The first line, "No one hears your teardrops as they blow in the wind," suggests that the singer's pain is invisible to those around them. Their suffering goes unnoticed and unacknowledged, as symbolized by teardrops that "no one sees."

The line "No one ever holds you you lose and never win" speaks to the isolation and loneliness that the singer feels, despite their valiant efforts to connect with others. The more they try to be seen and heard, the more they're overlooked and disregarded, and the worse their state becomes.

The second verse is even more devastating as it describes the singer's final moments. "When you're on your deathbed they might hold your hand," suggests that even in death, the singer is only important to those around them as a means of appeasing their own consciences. They'll make plans for their next holiday, ignoring the plight of the person dying beside them. The singer notes that "No one wants the raindrops or your withered flesh," intimating that the singer's physical and emotional state repels those around them. The final words of the verse, "Only want you when you're young and smart and fresh," drive these concepts home even further, highlighting society's obsession with youth and beauty and how that distorts our perception of others.

Overall, Teardrops is a tragic song that paints a heart-wrenching picture of how society treats those on the fringes. The lyrics are a commentary on the way that we overlook and forget about those who are struggling the most, and how our tendency to value people only for their youth and attractiveness perpetuates this cycle of neglect and abuse.

I needed this... but didn't know it. Recently found tiger lillies, was always a Klaus Nomi fan...I balance my happy side with a sad, depressed side.  But, I do not want to get stuck in either for too long.
