Requiem
The Time/Luck Children Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Make me understand the sacred holy land
Filled with shadows from a war it's everywhere
Everlasting souls from temples of this place
Still I've got no room for everyone.

I'm able to destroy my enemy
Convicting me condemning me with air
The virgin lies are here but far away
Aiming on the way to the stars...to the stars

Never left for real the soldier made of steel
Crucify is not what he attends to do
Ever fading walls my cross is in the sky
Now I've got a room for everyone.

I'm able to destroy my enemy
Convicting me condemning me with air
The virgin lies are here but far away
Aiming on the way to the stars...to the stars

Bravery heavenly are the ways you will be here
Sanctuary penalty are the grafts of destiny
In the sky asking why each disciple has to go
Gather all spirits fall.

What's the answer to the question that we have
You might find it in the stars
Pretty gone since you set my heart on fire
Save the fallen tears of love.

Confucius where are you?
It's time to go!
It's Time Requiem!

Suddenly they screamed the angles of my dream
Multitude with swords and staffs betraying me
Saying all these words that saviors turned aside
Still I've got room for everyone.

I'm able to destroy my enemy
Convicting me condemning me with air
The virgin lies are here but far away
Aiming on the way to the stars...to the stars

Have mercy, Lord on me, regard me bitter weeping
Your forgiveness has assured me
Though you Son's despair and pain.

I do not deny my guilt
But your mercy, if you will

Far exceeded me transgression
Of which I must make confession.

Gentle Shadow

Oh, I mean if we want to criticize the story on the meta grounds of how it is formed and develops, I would argue you're both right and that that's very intentional.

Evan pretty quickly shows no guilt, remorse, or introspection when Connor dies, and the narrative seems to imply it's his fault in a sense that he died. So the story ends up being that Evan misunderstood a kid's intentions so hard he killed himself and we're still intended to empathize as Evan comes up with more and more contrived lies backfilling a relationship that I genuinely think they could have actually had, albeit Evan blames drugs for Connor's mood issues and not the fact that he could also have a debilitating mental illness. I get that he thought Connor picked on him, but when someone offs themselves and you were the last person to have a row with them, doesn't that at least merit some anxiety or introspection if you really give a shit about human life?

Idk. If that was a question he genuinely was asking himself, I don't think it would have been so easy for him to grow so dependent on Connor's family. They strong armed him into pretending, but Evan never needed to lean in or lie.

So of course the story from Evan's perspective is full of flat people. Evan makes no effort to bring their characters to the surface. He thinks about them in specific ways and the plot is literally him trying to forge character development onto a corpse so he doesn't get caught in a lie.

Evan is easy to empathize with if you've had his problems before, but he's still borderline narcissistic and can't see other people's feelings beyond his own nose. Everyone else has to tell him how other people feel, and he's quick to dismiss anyone who he doesn't like the story of (ie Jason). This pretty quickly makes him leech onto a family pretending to have lost something and grifting care from them. The only reason the illusion falls apart is that they start fighting and Evan's need for conflict avoidance overrides his desire for the status quo.

Alana or Zoe's perspectives would be uninteresting simply because it's transparently obvious what Evan's doing if you're a cynical viewer from the sidelines.

The only good part of the musical is that Evan does seek her out and apologize a year later, which - like, yeah, all teens are capable of being narcissistic monsters. They grow past it. It's natural.

I just think this story is only able to be interesting to anyone because it's shown through the lens of an anxious mess of a child, so you don't really think about the hurt he's causing before he makes a mistake and starts to tear the family apart. If you don't view Evan as POV, it just becomes a teenager grifting off a suicide he may be partially responsible for.
