So here is my experience with the alt-right.

I have problems with "gay culture" and the "gay flamboyant stereotype" that society and especially hollywood likes to push. As a kid i had different feelings towards other boys and i did not know what to make of them but i did know that i should probably keep them hidden and not act on them.

i noticed that people always contributed a feminine man with the word "gay" or "homo" both socially and in media (with a negative conitation also). I later relised that gay meant that you had attraction to the same gender/sex.
But how can i be gay if i don't act feminine i thought?

i slowly accepted my sexuality and that i would disappoint my family but honestly i did not really care of what my parents thought of my sexuality (i seem to be the 0.01% of people who did not care for their parents belifes) i knew that they would still love me...even if they thought that my sexuality was some genetic defect or something (my parents are catholic in tradition only, they don't really believe in the bible or god)

The issue was more with my internal identity and how the larger society's view of my sexuality.

And the responce that i got from society was that my sexuality was a deviation and that it made me less of a man.
I don't know how to describe the feeling but a lesser version of gender dysphoria might be the right word or at the very least dysphoria.

Anyways this is kind of how i personally started to lean torwads the right.
However i did not have to go all the way to know that the right were one side of the coin that pushed the idea that gay men are lesser in all types of ways. I saw that they only used us as ammunition torwards immigrants.

I also noticed the sexist, racist and transphobic views that the right had witch was an attributing factor that hindered me from falling down the rabbit hole.

I think that the media and the left should make a better effort to disassociate sexuality from gendered behaviour. I have even noticed that this effects scientists who seems to study homosexuality through the lens of a stereotype (if that makes any sense)
I think that this would prevent more LGBT people form going to the right.

Btw if a name is german and is spelled with vowel + e it usually means it’s umlauted:
-ae = ä
-aeu = äu
-oe = ö (so it can be Röhm or Roehm)
-ue = ü

the reason for Röhm's execution are complicated and not really tied to his sexuality, and it's also important to note that he wasn't just Hitler's friend, but his closest/best friend.
I'm not trying to say the Nazis weren't homophobic, just that the homophobia of the Nazis was a bit more complicated.

I'm gonna be honest, years ago every time I would hear about how gays are treated in a lot of majority muslim countries and hearing about the situation with gay people in chechnya (despite being in russia and being mostly white people, chechnya is also majority muslim), and especially after the pulse nightclub shooting, even though I wouldn't say I became a fascist or anything close to it, I mean I certainly don't share the disdain for femininity and "gay culture" these guys seem to have and I've never been nationalistic at all but I did start to feel very uncomfortable at the thought of a large number of muslims migrating here, and tbh we're better than some places on LGBT issues but there's still plenty of work to be done and I was like "do we really want even more people that we have to convince to treat us fairly?" and it felt like milo was the only one willing to voice this concern so I was a fan of milo's for awhile. Eventually though I remember reading a pew study that found muslim immigrants were increasingly accepting of LGBT rights over the years and are about on par with protestants in the percentage of them that support LGBT rights, and it seems like if anything immigration has perhaps given some of these people an opportunity for their feelings about LGBT people to evolve. I think it can kind of illustrate how "feelings" and "narrative" can override the reality of the situation, like there's no actual instances of muslims rampaging through WeHo gay-bashing folks or something, but people like Milo can spin a narrative based on the general unease some disaffected white folks feel rather than any empirical reality.

When I was 14-15 I too fell down this alt right rabbit hole for the exact reasons as u stated (I’m 19 and a gay man). But these online views I had never ever reflected the reality I saw in life Being from the uk and an area with a reasonable amount of Muslim people, as well as literally having Muslim friends that I knew weren’t homophobic (not that they knew I was gay mind), I can certainly vouch too that there was a) a lot of cognitive dissonance in my beliefs and b) a lot misinformation I was being fed by people like Milo. Sure a lot of muslims are homophobic in the west, but so are a lot of other groups. Evidently there are a lot issues surrounding human rights of all kinds in immigrant communities in Europe and America, but this is not to say that they’re ruining our countries or even imposing their beliefs on us.

And also, the one thing these gay nazis never like to mention, is the real victims of Islamic homophobia... GAY MUSLIMS
It’s always ‘our society is victim to this horrible religion etc etc’ and this is such a selfish, self-serving, self-victimising rhetoric that makes my blood boil. But hey, it’s just the left that play the victim card right....

@cba tbh I would say is an issue of religious fundamentalism rather that the whole of Islam. By observing those Muslim majority countries where LGBTQ people are persecuted and killed the pattern that repeats itself if a string of extremely conservative and fundamentalist goverments. For example, many Middle Eastern countries during the 40s, 50s and 60s had more liberal and secular governments (Beirut, Lebanon was knowed as the Paris of Orient and had one of the biggest gay night scenes) but after coups, civil wars and international intervention many of this countries ended up how we know them today. Turkey is still one of the only gay friendly countries in the area despite many setbacks during the current conservative administration.
The case of religious fundamentalism being the problem instead of Islam is very clear in countries like Hungary, Poland, Russia, Caribbean islands like Jamaica and countries like Kenya and Uganda who are majoritarily Christian where its illegal and/or LGBTQ rights had faced serious setbacks.
An easy way to imagine this is thinking how the US would be if the Westboro Baptist Church or any Christian fundamentalist group came to power

@Luisdi Monestel couldn’t say it better myself. Islam is no different to Christianity, in so that when taken with a fundamental interpretation, only bad things ensue. I’ve met and know personally many gay Muslims some of whom have supporting parents, others not, and some that simply have not told their parents. Infact I have a friend from Lebanon and most of his Muslim friends don’t care that he’s bi. Lebanon is also the most liberal country in the Middle East, whereas Turkey is slipping more into a religious conservative country.

@cba tbh no I don’t agree necessarily because it depends on the individual. Some of the times Islamic ideology can be a threat to the livelihood of lgbt people (I know someone who’s been disowned by his Muslim family) but equally I know Muslims who’s families have accepted their sexuality so it depends. Most second or third generation Muslims are just as liberal as the average Brit, but this is a pattern u see with most immigration. It isn’t necessarily a religious one

One of the last works of history I looked at in my microhistory class (microhistory because it covers a subject that is small in the historical record, such as a single person that isn't commonly discussed or a single less important event, not that the work itself is small, though it sometimes is a small work) was an article by Laurie Marhoefer on a lesbian that was persecuted by nazis. Apparently, lesbians were usually not persecuted by nazis in as clear ways as gays and bisexual men and had, thus, been excluded from a museum in germany explaining the relationship between nazis and gay people. This article showed how one woman was persecuted for her sexuality (and also explains what I was saying about lesbians and persecution better than I have, I love it when works of history are explicit about why they exist). The title is "Lesbianism, Transvestitism, and the Nazi State: A Microhistory of a Gestapo Investigation, 1939-1943" Published by the American Historical Review (possibly others too). It's only about 30 pages long.

So called "Umlaute" in German are vowels in combination with an e. ae is a pretty common combination in latin based languages, but we also have oe and ue (ä ,ö, ü, respectively). I think you're mixing up the Sacred Band of Thebes which consisted of 150 gay couples with the 300 at thermopylae. Homosexuality in the military was super common and encouraged in ancient greece as a morale booster but only the Sacred Band of Thebes was an exclusively homosexual couple unit from what I can tell, the number of troops matching with the 300 at thermopylae seems like a coincidence or 300 was a common size of groupings of soldiers at the time, I'm not sure on that one.

I think you hit on an interesting point when you talked about gay culture at the end of the video. It's not uncommon for closeted or just-open gay people to not feel at ease with the stereotypical image of what a gay man should be. I have many friends here in Amsterdam who have struggled with this. Being somewhat outside of everyday society for being gay while at the same time also not feeling at home in gay culture can be very rough.

I can imagine that these people, not feeling accepted anywhere, are then drawn to the alt-right. I have no idea how prevalant gay people turning to the alt-right actually is. Regardless, it seems very sad to me. In the end they're just being used.

Calvin Parish yeah my dad was very depressed after they broke up because my parents tried for years to have me and only a few years after i was born they broke up so my dad felt like he had wasted his life probably. He would just sit and watch tv on his own or work on his bikes in the garage all day, barely ever spoke to me and made me feel like he hated me and because i had somesort of trauma from a incident with my mum i didnt learn anything at school i had word blindness he would say i was stupid all the time, my mum did the total opposite but not in a good way she was always saying i was Brilliant and all that when i had done nothing. You can't really separate sexual orientation from "gendered behaviour" thanks to the cisheteronormative society we live in.
Also, respectability politics and only hating on the "wrong kind of gays" (meaning flamboyant men who somehow threaten the masculinity of straight men just for being around them and butch women who do not appeal to the male gaze) is also just homophobia rebranded. Respectability politics are never an option because the moment you go a single step too far in expressing yourself or daring to demand respect, you too become one of the "wrong gays" and the right will drop you like a hot potato the exact minute they don't have a use for you anymore. Holy shit, I didn't know about Haider and Kühnen being gay. The former doesn't really surprise me, the latter does so pretty much.
Haider was the classical populist of a generation born by the Nazis and who had never had anything to do with denazification, this is kinda generally the case in Austria. They framed it as being invaded and occupied, which is both true, but it's never mentioned that many people cheered and were loyal pretty much throughout the whole war. Guess that makes everything Austrian fascists did, doesn't matter, huh.
Kühnen was a very radical figure who was one of the key players in uniting, organizing and radicalizing different fractions and groups in the German and European Neo-Nazi movement of the 80s and 90s, which practically leading to the situation and networks today.
Compared to Kühnen, Haider is definetly the softer version by a length. Haider was a racist, bigot and cult creator, but he was definetly not a militant Neo-Nazi responsible for creating a nazi terrorist network that killed at least 9 people in six years while the whole thing is still pretty much covered up by the "Constitution Defense" and other state figures.
It surprises me how he could even become such a central figure in the scene while pretty much every other Nazi knew that he was gay. I mean even the average person in 80s or 90s Germany was some kind of homophobe. Imagine how much hate nazis will give you for this. I'm really surprised.

The primary reason why I think I am pansexual is because I am open and accepting of people as a whole. I cant imagine having romantic or sexual feelings towards some groups of people, while also having a racist or bigoted hatred towards other groups of people. Interesting video. I didn’t know aboit many of the “historical figures”.
I must say though, although I’m socially very liberal I do share the concerns about Islamic immigration into Europe regarding gay rights.
I don’t care about someone’s skin colour or ancestors but I do feel that the culture can be an issue. If you look at the protests in the UK recently about gay couples being taught in schools, the overwhelming majority of the protestors were Muslim.

Yes, and "Röhm" and "Roehm" are identical, the "oe" being a method to write ö if the typewriters did not allow for Umlauts. Tip for English speakers to pronouncing German, make vowels more open (literally open your mouth more) and don't be afraid to make them longer, too.

Röhm is not a word you'll find it easy to pronounce. It needs like... A gutteral rolled R that's hard to do if you're Anglo because your pallet is shaped slightly differently. Last thing I read about it suggests that the pallet sets in a certain way based on the words you learn growing up basically. So certain noises are tough for non-native speakers to make. Rohm will either be Roh-mm (to almost rhyme with from) with the gutteral rolled R or Roohm with the rolled R depending on dialect. 😂 linguistics. Yayyyyy.

its Röhm, and definitely not Rohm. Sometimes when the "ö" isn't available on the keyboard, people write it as "oe" instead. just look up how to pronounce the "ö" letter and you should be fine. German is quiet easy on pronouncing words. Onve you know how the letters are pronounced, you can pronounce every word correctly, cause we actually say every letter. Not like english or frenvh were you have a bunch of letters that aren't needed for pronouciation in words.
