Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel
The Tolkien Ensemble Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A Elbereth Gilthoniel
O Elbereth Starkindler
Silivren penna míriel
White-glittering, slanting down sparkling like a jewel,
O menel aglar elenath!
The glory of the starry host!
Na-chaered palan-díriel
Having gazed far away
O galadhremmin ennorath,
From the tree-woven lands of Middle-earth,
Fanuilos, le linnathon
To thee, Everwhite, I will sing,
Nef aear, sí nef aearon!
On this side of the Sea, here on this side of the Ocean!
A Elbereth Gilthoniel
O Elbereth Starkindler,
O menel palan-diriel,
From heaven gazing afar,
Le nallon sí di′nguruthos!
To thee I cry now beneath the shadow of death!

A tiro nin, Fanuilos!
O look towards me, Everwhite!

Overall Meaning

The Tolkien Ensemble's "Elven Hymn to Elbereth Gilthoniel" is a beautiful and captivating song that pays homage to the Elven goddess Elbereth Gilthoniel, also known as Star-kindler. The lyrics are written in Sindarin, a fictional language created by J.R.R. Tolkien for his Middle-earth universe. The song begins with a plea to Elbereth Gilthoniel, praising her beauty and likening her to a white glittering jewel, and recognizing her as the source of glory for the starry host. The following lines speak of having gazed far away at the tree-woven lands of Middle-earth and declaring a commitment to sing to her, even on this side of the Sea, on this side of the Ocean.

The second verse of the song continues the praise for Elbereth Gilthoniel by emphasizing her heavenly nature, gazing down upon the earth from a distance. The final line of this verse introduces a plea for her protection, cried out from beneath the shadow of death. The final line of the song brings the song full circle, as the singer again implores Elbereth Gilthoniel to look towards them and provide guidance and protection.

Snow-white! Snow-white! O Lady clear!
O Queen beyond the Western Seas!
O light to us that wander here
Amid the world of woven trees!

Gilthoniel! O Elbereth!
Clear are thy eyes and bright thy breath!
Snow-white! Snow-white! We sing to thee
In a far land beyond the sea.

O Stars that in the Sunless Year
With shining hand by her were sown,
In windy fields now bright and clear
We see your silver blossom blown!

O Elbereth! Gilthoniel!
We still remember, we who dwell
In this far land beneath the trees,
Thy starlight on the Western Seas.

The concept of the entire universe created by a song is such a powerful one. For me, I always imagined this song A Elbereth Gilthoniel as a tribute and an attempt by the elves to simulate this cosmic-divine music that the Ainur played for Erú, a music that lasted for eons and eons.

(Sorry for the "google translator english" lol; although I understand english perfectly, I don't feel safe to write it well.)

@Divinemartyr

As a guy who has nothing but nightmares... horrific nightmares... things so unspeakable they are hard to describe. I have to say I am not someone who is too optimistic about going to bed. I usually get extremely stressed right before I have to go to sleep. So I have to listen to insanely beautiful music like this to help relax so I can go to sleep. What a beautiful cycle

@YouSuprised

Often nightmares are warnings that our mind has difficulty to apprehend. A good idea is to meditate and start seeking nature and everything good. Stop watching TV, films and everything ugly that dominates modern day entertainment.

I hope after 10 years, you are doing better.

@@YouSuprised I know you mean well but your allusions to vague superstitious "warnings" and prescription of cutting out "modern day entertainment" are very bizarre. This very youtube video is an example of "modern day entertainment". Nature and meditation are indeed good, and I know there can be a certain appeal to some types of extreme return-to-nature Ted Kaczynski/Chris McCandless philosophies, but they will not always be helpful for everyone and can often be very harmful. It might be easy to blame all of our emotional problems on TV and movies, but that is a gross oversimplification.

@timewasteland

I'm gonna spend my summer sitting in trees reading the Lord of the Rings, listening to this. And then someday, I'm gonna go to New Zealand and just be there, out in the nature.
