Marie
The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Marie (oh, Marie), the dawn is breaking
Marie, you'll soon be waking (girl of my dreams, I want you)
To find our heart's are aching (have a little faith in me, la-la-la-la)
And tears will fall as you recall (tears will fall again)
The moon in all its splendor (on a night like this, we go bettin' in the park)
Your kiss, so very tender (all the way my kiss, darlin')
The words, "Will you surrender
To me, Marie?"
(Livin' in a great big way, mama)

Overall Meaning

The song "Marie" by The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra is a classic love song, written by Irving Berlin, that tells the story of a man who is deeply in love with a woman named Marie. The song begins with the man singing to Marie, telling her that dawn is breaking and she will soon be waking up. He knows that when she wakes up, she will be overwhelmed with emotion and her heart will be aching, knowing that they are no longer together. The man then follows with reminiscing about the moon and the beautiful kisses they shared, with the hope that Marie will surrender her heart to him again.

The song's lyrics are powerful and emotional, capturing the essence of love and heartbreak. The repetition of Marie's name throughout the song is a poetic technique that emphasizes how much the man loves her and needs her in his life. The words "will you surrender to me" show that he is willing to do whatever it takes to win her back, to remind her of the love they once shared. The song is a beautiful tribute to the power of love, and how it can bring people together or sometimes tear them apart.

Enjoying again the wonderful melodies mostly with Tommy Dorsey arrangements. Frank (the voice)Sinatra to his generous credit when questioned how he managed to hold a musical note for so long always gave full credit to watching Tommy’s breathing technique with the trombone. Two Wonderful musical Greats.

@duneclimb

Dorsey inspired my dad to take up trombone in school back in the 40s, and every time I hear any of Dorsey's hits from the 30s and 40s, to which my dad introduced me, I smile thinking of him. Thanks.

@EricJamesHanson

Dorsey's playing is SO smooth, and he reached the upper register so effortlessly. Then there is the explosive trumpet of Berrigan, who is one of music's sad stories. +

I don't think anyone will argue with me when I say that Tommy Dorsey was the ultimate trombonist. And who could ever match Bunny Berigan on that trumpet chorus. Jack Leonard gave the definitive romantic vocal treatment which modern 'artists' have never equaled. Today we are in a cultural backwater.

@ddkoda

My favorite version. Stellar talent throughout. Mr. Smoothness' intro, Jack's vocal and the great Bunny Berigan's nonpareil solo which I feel was a large factor in turning this tune into a major hit for TD. I think that Bunny was also instrumental in rocketing a number of other Dorsey songs into the stratosphere. The mind boggles in trying to think what Bunny could have accomplished if he lived past the age of 33.

ddkoda So sad about Bunny Berrigan! I have quite a few 78’s of him performing. I think Jack is seriously underrated!
