Read Full Bio ↴There are two bands that have recorded under the name The Toy Dolls.
1. The Toy Dolls are a British punk rock band. They formed in 1979, playing their first ever gig at Millview Social Club, Sunderland, Tyne and Wear, UK, on 20 October 1979. After a couple of gigs, vocalist Pete Zulu left to form his own band. He was replaced by Paul "Hud" Hudson, who himself left after a single gig, leaving Toy Dolls as a trio with guitarist Michael "Olga" Algar to assume vocal duties. This was just the start of the revolving door of drummers and bassists that would characterize the Toy Dolls line-up over the years.
They quickly built up a local fan base and were initially grouped with the Oi! scene that was emerging at the time, although many would say that despite having the singalong choruses that are typical of Oi!, they are better classified as pop punk. Another reason they are associated with Oi! is that they were championed by Garry Bushell who was heavily involved with Oi! bands such as The Angelic Upstarts. In 1980 a local businessman financed their debut single, "Tommy Kowey's Car" with "She Goes to Finos" on the B-side. The single quickly sold out its initial 500 pressing but the band couldn't afford to press any more, making the single a collector's item.
In 1983, they released their debut album Dig That Groove Baby, by which time with Bushell's help they were beginning to attract national press attention, and in 1984 they burst into the charts with their punk rendition of "Nellie the Elephant", a classic children's song, which reached #4 in the UK charts and stayed in the Top 100 for no less than 12 weeks.
The Toy Dolls have since changed their lineup and record labels, establishing and cultivating fan bases in Europe, America and Japan, continuing to release new singles and albums.

James Bond lives down our street
I've seen him he catches the 32 bus
James Bond lives down our street
sometimes he sits on the back seat with us
he's got a gun strapped to his chest
you can't shoot him in a bullet proof vest
a clever lad but can be a pest sometime
0.0.7. James Bond lives down our street
Jimmy's a spy but both you and I know
Sean Connery or Roger Moore, that I'm not quite sure
But what I know is James Bond...
lives down our street
James Bond lives down our street
sometimes he gets a helicopter to work
James Bond lives down our street
me dad's oldfashioned and he says he's a jerk
he's always chasing a heavy mob
he should go out and get a proper job
he should go out and get a proper job sometime
CHORUS
Down our street there lives a spy
says he works for M.I. 5
he's always a star when you're having a party
says he went to school with Russel Harty
he's a real smarty
he is a real smarty.
My hair is Blonde! dyed blonde!
The Toy Dolls's song "James Bond Lives Down Our Street" is a playful ode to the famous fictional British spy who may or may not live in their neighborhood. The lyrics depict the singer repeatedly stating that James Bond, the character made famous by Ian Fleming's novels and subsequent film adaptations, lives on their street. The song introduces Bond as a person who is seen riding the bus and getting to work in a helicopter. The singer also comments on Bond's character, describing him as a clever lad but also a pest. The song also references the different actors who have portrayed Bond over the years, with the singer unsure if it is Sean Connery or Roger Moore who lives down their street.
The song is essentially a humorous take on the allure of James Bond and how the character has become a cultural icon. The lyrics take everyday details and apply them to the character, making him seem more accessible and grounded, despite his larger-than-life reputation. The song's chorus reinforces the idea that James Bond lives down their street, and while the verses introduce humorous observations about the character, the chorus ties everything together with its catchy repetition of "James Bond lives down our street".
Overall, "James Bond Lives Down Our Street" is a lighthearted tribute to one of the most iconic characters in popular culture, and it showcases The Toy Dolls's ability to take a serious subject and turn it on its head with playful lyrics and catchy melodies.

Saw Toy Dolls back in the a day. A punk band that spoofed punk but were more punk than a lot of punk bands.
Great stuff.

You've nailed it.
They were so much a parody of punk that in my mind they remain the epitome of what punk should have been all about; i.e., taking the piss out of everything but they do it with uplifting joy and humour instead of with vicious nihilism and anger.
