Poets
The Tragically Hip Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Spring starts when a heartbeat's pounding
When the birds can be heard above the reckoning carts doing some final accounting
Lava flowing in Superfarmer's direction
He's been getting reprieve from the heat in the frozen food section, yeah

Don't tell me what the poets are doing
Don't tell me that they're talking tough
Don't tell me that they're anti-social
Somehow not anti-social enough, that's right

And porn speaks to it's splintered legions
To the pink amid the withered cornstalks in them winter regions, yeah
While aiming at the archetypal father
He said with such broad and tentative swipes why do you even bother?
Yeah

Don't tell me what the poets are doing
Those Himalayas of the mind
Don't tell me what the poet's been doing
In the long grasses over time

Don't tell me what the poets are doing
On the street and the epitome of vague
Don't tell me how the universe is altered
When you find out how he gets paid, alright

If there's nothing more that you need now
The lawn cut by bare breasted women

Beach bleached towels within reach for the women
Got to make it, that'll make it by swimming

Overall Meaning

The Tragically Hip's song "Poets" opens with imagery of spring and the bustling activity of birds amidst the accounting of the city. The second verse departs from the natural imagery and introduces the complexities of modern society. The singer seems to scoff at the idea that poets are "anti-social" or that their work is solely "talking tough." Instead, the lyrics suggest that poetry addresses the splintered and forgotten corners of society, perhaps specifically through porn, and has the power to reveal the archetypes that shape us.

The third verse seems to mock the vague and grandiose language of some poets, calling them the "Himalayas of the mind." The final lines of the song introduce a surreal image, perhaps of an imagined utopia, where women mow lawns topless and towels are strategically placed on the beach. The song seems to suggest that amidst the chaos and superficiality of modern life, poetry has the power to reveal deeper truths and provide a much-needed escape.

@johnnydtractive

This is one of their best videos. Top 3.
It's a microcosm of the band live--the tight musicality, the sense of humour stuffed in all the nooks & crannies, & Gord. I mean he's just so....Gord. Constantly surprising, constantly using his body, his gestures & his facial expressions to riff in unexpected ways on the lyrics & music. All the little cinematic gestures--the shotgun, the lights out, the pandering to the audience of...cats. I just love this video, it's a fantastic amusing expression of everything great about the Hip.
