Highway of Heroes
The Trews Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The day I shipped out,
They numbered a dozen.
Upon my return,
Were a hundred or so.
From the coast and from the prairies,
I bet they keep coming.
Add one more name from Ontario.
And carry me home, down the highway of heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down the highway of heroes.
True patriot love,
There was never more.

I served with distinction,
No visions of glory.
I served without question,
Or personal gain.

Seek no justification,
It's not part of my story.
And it offers no comfort to the ones who remain.

Just carry me home down the highway of heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down the highway of heroes.
True patriot love,
There was never more.

I took up my vocation,
I was called by my nation.
Without hesitation,
My answer I gave.
Now I am not wondering,
The things that I might have been.
No consolation,
To the forgotten brave.

So carry me home, down the highway of heroes.
People above with their flags flying low.
Carry me softly, down the highway of heroes.
True patriot love,
There was never more.

Carry me home, down the highway of heroes.
People I love with their heads down low.
Carry me softly, down the highway of heroes.
True patriot love,
There was never more
There was never more
There was never more
There was never more

There was never more
There was never more

Overall Meaning

The Trews's song "Highway of Heroes" is a tribute to the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives serving their country, and the solemn procession that brings them home. The opening lyrics convey the overwhelming scale of the loss - the singer saw only twelve depart, but when they returned from war, the number had multiplied a hundredfold. The line "Add one more name from Ontario" serves as a reminder that each of these soldiers is an individual with their own story, and that their loss is deeply felt by those who knew them personally.

The chorus repeats the phrase "Carry me home, down the highway of heroes," which refers to the procession that brings the fallen soldiers' remains back to their hometowns. The image of people above with their flags flying low is a reference to the Canadian tradition of lowering flags to half-mast in mourning. The phrase "True patriot love, there was never more" reinforces the idea that these soldiers gave their lives out of a genuine love for their country, and that their sacrifice is the ultimate expression of what it means to be a patriot.

The final verse speaks to the sense of duty and honor that motivates soldiers to enlist. The singer feels no regret for serving, and would do it again without hesitation - but at the same time, they are fully aware that their service came with a cost. The line "No consolation, to the forgotten brave" expresses a sense of melancholy, as those who have died in service are unable to receive recognition or comfort for their sacrifice.

When I was about 12 years old, I played runescape with a Canadian Soldier. I played with him and talked to him almost every day, he never minded talking to a little kid and he gave that time of my life a lot of happiness. That February he got shipped out to afghanistan. He said he would be gone for months. In that time I stopped playing. I never knew his name. I still think about him every year around this time, wondering if he was one of the ones to go down that highway in a casket. Wherever you are buddy, I hope you found peace and happiness whether its on earth or in heaven or wherever you go, cause you're a hero to me and the country and you deserve it.
