Wildflowers
The Trio Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The hills were alive with wildflowers and I
Was as wild, even wilder than they
For at least I could run
They just died in the sun
And I refused to just wither in place

Just a wild mountain rose
Needing freedom to grow
So I ran fearing not where I'd go
When a flower grows wild
It can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

And the flowers I knew
In the fields where I grew
Were content to be lost in the crowd
They were common and close
I had no room for growth
And I wanted so much to branch out

So I uprooted myself from my home ground and left
Took my dreams and I took to the road
When a flower grows wild
It can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

I grew up fast and wild
And I never felt right
In a garden so different from me
I just never belonged
I just longed to be gone
So the garden one day set me free

I hitched a ride with the wind
And since he was my friend
I just let him decide where we'd go
When a flower grows wild
It can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Just a wild rambling rose seeking mysteries untold
No regret for the path that I chose
When a flower grows wild
It can always survive
Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Wildflowers don't care where they grow

Overall Meaning

The Trio's song "Wildflowers" is a reflection on the wild spirit within us all, using the metaphor of wildflowers to express the idea that we too can thrive and find our place without the constraints of societal expectations. The opening lines paint a vivid picture of the surrounding hills, with the singer identifying with the wildflowers, stating that she too is wilder than they are, with an irrepressible spirit to keep moving and growing. The idea of running and refusing to wither away is a call to action to push oneself to reach their full potential.

The song reflects on the singer's desire for freedom and growth, which ultimately leads to her leaving her comfort zone and taking to the road. She contrasts herself with the common and content flowers from her past, feeling that she must uproot herself to find her place in the world. Hitching a ride with the wind, she seeks out new experiences and mysteries that lie ahead, embracing the unknown and celebrating the wildness within herself. The song's ultimate message is summed up in its final lines, emphasizing that wildflowers don't care where they grow, a metaphor for the idea that we too can thrive in any circumstance if we embrace our wild spirit.

When I left the Caribbean island and moved to the US in 1989, I brought this cassette with me. It was one of my comfort music. I listened to it almost everyday for about two years straight. I still have that cassette with me. Beautiful voices.

If ya gotta go you gotta go. No one said it was easy but to stay would of been harder - so we go where we go - we are free.

@@dc9291 exactly I remembered playing this song over n over again , when I had to Divorce my husband of thirty one years because of alcoholism among a few other heartbreaking things . I had to uproot myself , because I was no longer content in a garden that had become so different from mines. Love the lyrics , an it's been ten years but I still listen to it from time to time .
