Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.

Every single day you will be
Wearin' Paris gowns and diamond rings
There is nothing he can't buy you
And I can not tell a lie
You know with me you'll never have those things
Glitter and gold
(Glitter and gold)
Glitter and gold
(Glitter and gold)
Never can make a wrong out right
Girl you're gonna find
You'll have my sweet, sweet lovin' on your mind
You'll be eatin' caviar
And ridin' in a chauffeured car
And all your friends will say
"How lucky can she be?"
He'll be keepin' you in style
But you'll remember all the while
The happiness you used to have with me
Glitter and gold
(Glitter and gold)
Never can keep you warm at night
Glitter and gold
(Glitter and gold)
Never can make a wrong out right
Girl you're gonna find
You'll have my sweet, sweet lovin' on your mind
Glitter and gold

The Turtles' song "Glitter and Gold" is a story of a man who tells a woman he loves that he knows what her wealthy lover can give her - Paris gowns, diamond rings, and an abundance of material things. However, he also tells her that he can offer her something her richer lover can't: his sweet, loving company. He admits that he can never buy or give her everything that her rich partner can, but he believes that these material things can never replace the warmth of a loving heart or the happiness of genuine, unpretentious love.
The song's lyrics are symbolic of the idea that money can't buy everything, especially true love. The man in the song acknowledges that he cannot provide his love with lavish things or material possessions, but he believes that he can give her something that is much more valuable - love and affection.
Overall, the song is a reminder to listeners that what truly matters in life is not wealth or material possessions, but rather the relationships and connections that we make with other people.
