Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.

Makin' muy mind up
Packin' my clothes today
To run away with you
Comin' to get you
We'd better hurry now
Just me and you
That's what we'll do
We'll be so happy
Even though some things
We will have to do without
Livin' together
Leading a life
Which no one else can talk about
Just me and you
That's what we'll do
Just me and you
We'll run away from here
Leave our families all behind
Stick with me and you shall have
Peace of mind
Makin' muy mind up
Packin' my clothes today
To run away with you
Comin' to get you
We'd better hurry now
We've got so much to do
Just me and you
That's what we'll do
Just me and you
We'll run away from here
Leave our families all behind
Stick with me and you shall have
Peace of mind
(Fade)
Makin' muy mind up
Packin' my clothes today
To run away with you
The Turtles' song "Makin' My Mind Up" is about two lovers who have decided to run away together. The lyrics describe the act of packing clothes and hurrying off to start a new life, leaving their families and other responsibilities behind. The song acknowledges that some things will be left behind, but the couple will be so happy together that it won't matter. They will live a life they can't talk about, away from the expectations and judgment of others.
The song captures the excitement and fear that comes with making such a big decision, but ultimately emphasizes the happiness that the two lovers will bring each other. It is a romanticized depiction of running away with someone, without fully acknowledging the potential difficulties and consequences of such a decision.
Overall, "Makin' My Mind Up" is a catchy and upbeat song that celebrates the thrill of breaking away from expectations and starting something new with someone you love.
