Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.
Say Girl
The Turtles Lyrics

And the turtles sun their shells
Where the water rat goes swimmin'
That's where my swamp girl dwells
Where the sunlight never wanders
And the moonlight never falls
Where the water's black with the devil's track
What did she say there
The girl with the golden hair
To make me follow her down there
How did she look when she took me by the hand
Tonight her hair will float in the water
And the gold will no longer shine
It will spread like a fan in the water
While she makes a mysterious sign
I have seen that sign before
Her eyes aren't like the whippoorwill
And her eyes aren't like the frog
Her eyes are like the damned bat
Stretchin' in the dawn
I have seen her face in the water
And the chilling look in her eyes
And if you see her, then you must flee her
Never follow where disillusion lies
Or will you go to the girl with the golden hair
Down there where her work is done
Will you embrace the night
And turn your back on the sun
She'll say its better there in the water
Where it's cool and calm and serene
She will call you to come to the water
To a world made of emerald green
I have heard that call before
I can hear it when I'm teary
I can hear it when I'm old
I can hear it when the joy of living
Seems to have lost its glow
For my Swamp Girl lives inside of me
And she leaves me pale and wan
She dares me, she tears me
Like paper dolls are torn
Calling "Come to the deep
Where your sleep is without a dream"
(Come to the deep where your sleep is without a dream)
Calling... (Come...)
The Turtles' song "Say Girl" is a hauntingly mysterious tale of a narrator who is entranced by a girl from the swamp. The song describes a place where cranes fly over the marshes, turtles sunbathe on their shells, and water rats swim. It is in this murky and foreboding location that the swamp girl is said to dwell. The singer speaks of her eyes, which are not like the birds or the frogs, but are like the eyes of a damned bat. He has also seen her face in the water and witnessed the chilling look in her eyes. Despite this, he seems to be drawn to her and tempted to follow her down into the depths of the swamp.
The song's lyrics suggest a certain danger and intrigue, as the swamp girl is depicted as an otherworldly and possibly malevolent figure. She speaks of a world under the water, which is cool and calm and serene, a place where dreams do not exist. The singer is warned not to follow where disillusion lies, but he seems to be powerless against her call. The swamp girl seems to represent a kind of dark and mysterious force, which the singer is unable to resist.

To make me follow her down there
To entice me to descend into the forbidding swamp
How did she look when she took me by the hand
What was the expression on her face when she led me into the depths
Tonight her hair will float in the water
This evening, her tresses will sway with the current

It will spread like a fan in the water
The strands will splay out like a hand-held fan

I have seen that sign before
I have observed that exact movement previously
Her eyes aren't like the whippoorwill
The shape and coloring of her eyes are dissimilar to a bird's
And her eyes aren't like the frog
Nor do they resemble those of a green amphibian

Glimpsed at daybreak, when these creatures are just settling down

I have previously spied her reflection in the murky depths
And the chilling look in her eyes
And witnessed the eerie expression in her gaze
And if you see her, then you must flee her
If you encounter her, you should rapidly retreat
Never follow where disillusion lies
Don't fall under the spell of her illusions
Or will you go to the girl with the golden hair
Or will you succumb to the girl's enticing summons
Down there where her work is done
To her encampment where she carries out her mysterious activities
Will you embrace the night
Will you revel in darkness
And turn your back on the sun
And ignore the light of day
She'll say its better there in the water
She'll suggest that the swamp is the superior place to be
Where it's cool and calm and serene
Where the environment is comfortable and placid
She will call you to come to the water
She will entice you to join her in the murky depths
To a world made of emerald green
To another realm that resembles a green gemstone
I have heard that call before
I have previously been lured by that siren's song
I can hear it when I'm teary
I can still detect the summons when feeling sad
I can hear it when I'm old
Or when advanced in years
I can hear it when the joy of living
Even when experiencing the pleasures of daily existence
Seems to have lost its glow
When that happiness starts to feel less luminous
For my Swamp Girl lives inside of me
For that mysterious woman seems to reside in my very soul
And she leaves me pale and wan
And her hold over me imparts a haunting pallor to my complexion
She dares me, she tears me
She challenges, and at times, distresses me
Like paper dolls are torn
In the manner of how one might rip and discard a flimsy plaything
Calling "Come to the deep
Summons to "Come to the profound depths
Where your sleep is without a dream"
Where one's slumber is devoid of visions or fantasies
(Come to the deep where your sleep is without a dream)
Repeating the eerie invitation
Calling...
Continuing to call out to those who are susceptible to her allure
