Originated from a surf rock group called the Crossfires, the Turtles delved into many genres such as breezy pop, psychedelic music, and folk rock. A precursor to the bubblegum pop of the late 60s and early 70s as well as a foil to the more self-consciously hip and "serious" acts of the era, the Turtles produced at least a dozen memorable, radio-friendly chart singles. Yet they remain best known for 1967's "Happy Together", which was their only chart-topping single.
The Turtles wound down their career in 1970.
The two prominent singers - Howard Kaylan ("Eddie") and Mark Volman ("Flo" a.k.a. "Phlorescent Leech") - collaborated with Frank Zappa for a short but very intensive period of one and a half years (between 1970-72) and were the cornerstone of what was known to be the Zappa "Vaudeville" band; two of the most famous achievements of that period being the albums Fillmore East – June 1971 and 200 Motels, the soundtrack of the film by the same name.
She'd Rather Be with Me

Love to run around
Love to handle everything they see
But my girl
Has more fun around
And you know she'd rather be with me
Me oh my (me oh my, I'm a lucky guy)
Lucky guy is what I am
She don't fly although she can
Some boys (some boys)
Love to run around
They don't think about the things they do
But this boy (this boy)
Wants to settle down
And you know he'd rather be with you
Me oh my (my)
Lucky guy is what I am (my)
Tell you why, you'll understand (my)
She don't fly although she can (my)
Some girls (some girls)
Love to run around
Love to handle everything they see
But my girl (my girl)
Has more fun around
And you know she'd rather be with
Yeah, she'd rather be with
You know she'd rather be with me
You know she'd rather be with me
You know she'd rather be with me
You know she'd rather be with me
The Turtles’s song “She’d Rather Be With Me” is a tribute to a girl who prefers hanging out with the singer than partying with her friends. The first verse is about how some girls love to run around and handle everything they see, but the singer’s girl has more fun around, and he is lucky to be with her. He repeats the phrase, “Me oh my, I'm a lucky guy,” to emphasize how fortunate he feels to have her in his life. He explains that she can fly but chooses not to because she prefers to be with him.
The second verse switches perspective, discussing how some boys only want to run around and not think about their actions. However, the singer is ready to settle down and would prefer to be with his love interest. He repeats the same chorus with a slight change, indicating that he is also a lucky guy for being with her.
The song is a simple yet effective message of appreciation for a significant other who chooses to spend time with the singer despite other options. It is a tribute to loyalty and the importance of personal connections.
