When I was in the navy boot camp, we got punished a lot. Like, did not stand correctly, Group punishment, everyone start doing push ups until I tell you to stop. But I remember this moment very well. One instructor came in our squadron, told us if you are twins, they need to step out. She verbally abused and threatened us with group punishment because no twin stepped out. She finally opened up the binder she came in with, called out 2 names cuz they have the same last name and same birthday. And we saw one black guy and one white guy step out. It was the funniest shit I have ever seen

I went into bootcamp at 225 pounds. I left at 191 and my run time went from a 16 minute mile and a half to a 11 minute 54 second mile and a half. Put the effort in and you will make it, also if you suck at running, run at night.

Enlisted Marine here. I promise this stuff isn't bad. I've talked to a lot of Sailors, and honestly, the boot camp isn't that intense compared to Marine boot camp. Their fitness requirements are pretty low compared to us, and they've certainly got way less restrictions, in and out of boot camp. If I had any advice, I'd say to just take it day by day, it isn't that bad. If you set your mind to it, you can make it through, have some discipline, and have respect for the uniform you wear, and the Sailors, Marines, or otherwise, around you.

Time will pass quickly. surely in 2 weeks you will receive a call from bootcamp for me 2 best call that i did when i was there. I graduated from bootcamp on July 14, it was the best moment, surely there will be moments that will be difficult for you, but in the end you laugh and are happy at those moments because you get to a place that you have not thought of being able to achieve.

The hardest thing when you separate out of the Navy, is getting back to that individual mindset. You're taught teamwork your whole time in. When you do get out. You'll be motivated, dedicated, and do as you were taught: to work as a team, and to take ownership. You'll go out of your way to help coworkers, family, etc, and you'll volunteer to stay late at work, and take accountability when things go wrong. You'll then realize that people won't ever do the same for you, they don't care that you do these things, and that there is a huge lack of responsibility and integrity in the civilian sector. You'll get screwed over a few times until the day you finally accept that you need to go back to thinking of yourself first and foremost prior to worrying about others.

Quite the opposite actually. I had, in my opinion, the best job in the Navy with a tight group of people to work with. Everyone I worked with was a like a brother or sister to me and I'm still in touch with several of them to this day. I'm not saying that every day in the Navy was great but being around those men and women made the work more bearable

Jacke Egress the Navy is awesome. It really is all about what you make of it in the end. Back when I was in 9 years ago, I didn't really have a big drive or motivation to go very far; just long enough to lock in education benefits and then GTFO. Looking back now, I wish I had stuck it out, had more motivation to make rank, etc. Thankfully, I separated Honorably with an RE-3F discharge code and so I can always go back (with a waiver of course). Looking at reserves first and do that for a couple years and then go full on active again 😎 What rate are you looking at?

@MordecaiYeah man i don’t agree with U.S. foreign policy but if somebody is right out of highschool, doesn’t know what they want to do with their life, and doesn’t want to see ground combat in the military-The Navy is a really good option , lots of job opportunities in the branch and even once you leave you have tons of experience and credits for college among other things. I’m joining the Navy solely so I can get Fire Fighting experience and then become a Firefighter

For anyone who has a recruit just barely going in to the boot camp, make sure to send them their letters. They really look forward to and appreciate the letters in a time they cannot communicate via phone to their family and friends. And when you do see them they will look different, when we went to see my brother we barely recognized him but blood recognizes blood and tears just started to fall. He definitely lost like over 20lb in the time he was there, his face was so slim. Bootcamp was the slimmest he has ever been

My first military experience was at Great Lakes in 1958. I ended up in the Sea Bees on Okinawa. My second was the US Army at age 38, and Airborne School at Benning at age 40. Served with the best in the 11th SFGP for 6-1/2 years and out for good in 1986. Lot of memories here.

I learned something new just now, at 3:55. As Asians, we are taught, or expected to be shown somehow throughout out growing up years, that to look at an adult (mom, dad, grandparents et al) in the eye in an exchange is rude. I didn't know the US Armed Forces also has that social behavior as one of their rules: you're not to look straight at a senior officer in the eye when they speak to you, as it is a sign of disrespect.

My nephew has just finished his tour of duty with the US Marines, having just returned from Japan, and my niece has just started her Navy officer career, having gone there after her BA degree --- both following their respective fathers before them, in the Marines and Navy --- but I've never discussed any such rules or cultures of the US armed forces with them, or with their respective dads before that.

And it makes total sense: when an officer is speaking, he or she expects 100% attention from you.... there's no time to play "eye games" or other facial games. When your job is to protect your country and other members of the armed forces, you don't have time for games. Orders and information must be given quickly and in succinct ways, from the more senior folks to the foot soldiers, if disasters are to be minimized or avoided.

It's one of my passions to serve in the Navy. As a kid I went to nursing home with my classmates in 6th grade. Seeing the elderly especially the veterans who are being treated were greeted for us in open arms was such a fantastic sight to see and be. A woman I met her name was Linda. God rest her soul. She served in the Air Force. We talked, I enjoyed her stories when she served and worked overseas and how proud she was to be an American to have served this country and paved the way for future generations to follow in her footsteps. She and many brave warriors who fought for their lives and sacrifice make me want to serve in the Armed Forces. The Navy hit me in h.s. seeing the recruiters stationed Career Day I was compelled to do it. I want to follow the sea, take me were the oceans flow the steady tide to different gateways of wonders. I couldn't swim, I want overcome my fears to not only swim but the terrors in the deep. I want to honor my friend Linda, she's like a grandmother to me. She sang "God Bless America" every mornings when we see her, she had an amazing voice of an angel, she looks down on me. Not many I know remember her I keep her with me wherever I go. We play bingo together and win raffles. Seeing this video for what kids go through by the time they're meddling troublemakers to enrolling the phases in the base into become sailors its an intense journey to represent their families and becoming something in life.

Realizing how close battle stations was to freedom hall was weird but walking into that building and watching that video to the actual event was insane. I felt like I was in a simulation. The room is cold and windy with audio of guns and bombs and missiles. It's insane and I loved every second of it. My instructors weren't mean at all they worked with us and let up figure it out on our own. Battle stations was the most fun I'd ever had.

Back in the 70's there was also bootcamp in Orlando Florida. That's where I went and I enjoyed it. The physical part was not difficult compared to playing high school football. The mental part is harder. I was in company 217D (drill team company). We performed for 3 graduations including our own. My company commander was AO1 Wayne Wilson from the carrier America. Never forget him.

If anyone’s worried about Bootcamp, it’s really easy. It is a fun experience, yes you will get yelled at, yes the first 1-2 weeks will suck, but it gets so much better. Especially towards the end. If you’re worried physically, I did not workout before Bootcamp. First real pt test, (RDC Assessment), I did like 54 push ups and 2 minute plank, but failed the run at 14:34, and I needed a 13:45 to pass. That failure unfortunately set me back 3 weeks. But I got into a much better division, who motivated me until the end, and I passed at the end of Bootcamp with the run time of 11:29. Yes you do extra workout a few times a week if you get set back, and it sucks, but it really helps out.

If anyone is worried about swim qual, yall don’t worry and always give it your 110%. I came in without knowing how to swim, the instructors are professional and will set you up for success. Do what you’re told and always willing to try. Avoid the setback from your division. That’s what happened to me. Yall got this. Hooyah DIV 156!!!

I think ever kid in the country should go to boot camp for 4 to 8 weeks even if your not going to join the military just have some discipline. There are some training regimen missing now than what I went through in 1971 like the obstacle course, the punishments in the barracks like the trip to Georgia carrying your bunk bed topped with your closet full of clothes and gear and run stationary for as long as what our Recruit Company Commander wanted and the 4 am marches with rifles on your shoulders grinding the ground all day in 113 degree hot weather. The transformation from civilian to military is a major cultural shock. Kudos to these recruits who had the desire to serve their country like I did to preserve freedom.

We had one guy who attempted to escape RTC Great Lakes. They made him dress up in full gear and trench coat with a full sea bag. He had to pretend he was trying to get over the “fence” which was a bunk bed, over and over. Seen a petty officer punch a recruit/sugar belt in the mouth for not getting our division lined up on time. Laid him out. Never saw either of ‘‘em again after that.

My division 096 and our brother division 095 were the first divisions to complete the old battle stations and the new battle stations 21 on the same night back in 2007. We were the last divisions ever to run the original battle stations before they switched over to battle stations 21. We were the inaugural divisions to usher in the new era of battle stations and that to me is cool asf. 😎
The old battle stations was tough because you had to run across the entire base with gear and boots to accomplish different tests and obstacles.

Nice! Very few people have experienced both. I graduated boot camp in 2012 so 21 was relatively new and I heard plenty of stories of the old battle stations. THe new one makes more sense to me, it's more ship oriented. The old one sounds like Army stuff more than Navy stuff.

@Michael Hunsinger Yes. The older battle stations was more boots to ground Army/Marine fitting. The BS21 is more in line with what we could face out at seas as Sailors. I’m happy that the first test was our actual test and that the BS21 portion was more of a treat for us. Like going to a Universal Studios interactive ride. I had so much fun inside there.

I went through bootcamp almost 37 years ago. At different points during the intense first few weeks of bootcamp several individual recruits (me included) at different times would get up the nerves\balls to challenge the drill instructor. Most of the time it did not turn out well for the individual recruit with us being put back in our place without any demerits on our record. After an "incident" was concluded the individual recruit involved would go back to training generally as if nothing happened. I still remember the "hate\like\appreciate" relationship I had with my trainers\instructors as if it was yesterday. That being said, there's NO WAY, NO WAY I at the age of 19 or some of the other recruits I trained with at that time would have allowed a female to get in our faces and scream at us the way it was depicted in this segment. No way. Times have changed the question is, is it for better or worse?

Also I remember being in one of the divisions that did beta tested the pacer test. Sorry to everyone having to do it and doing terribly at it.

And the gas chamber was fun. I asked to do it again and my RDCs clowned on me for it on the last week.

Man I remember going through battle stations before the simulation ship showed up… it was intense. Had to run to each scenario around base, it was a night I will never forget.

I went through Boot Camp in 1998. Retired in 2018. I recognized much of this, but there is so much that new recruits have that I didn't. Our Battlestations event wasn't in one building but spread across base. Marching there was one way to stay awake.

I'm going to be honest, this is not that difficult. For a young person in average shape the physical demands are only semi difficult, and the mental demands are low. And yes, I've done it. Once you get to the fleet, depending on your rate (job), things could get a lot more difficult or a whole lot easier.

@Mc Millions with a decent ASVAB score, and a US citizen, almost guaranteed you can get most jobs. Low ASVAB score, or not a citizen, or you're interested in one of those jobs that require a very high ASVAB score, then it can be very difficult to get what you want.

@Mc Millions yes, I'm very familiar with that. You're good. Not sure if you know. The Marines don't really have medics. Navy medics train and get deployed with the Marines to the front lines often.

I went to Great lakes naval training command in 1992 February 12th. I loved every minute of it. these kids wouldn't have survived when I went through. but I'm glad to see all these young men and women serving their country. Good luck ship mates! you're going to love the fleet

I went to basic training on 9/24/86. The stress the company commanders ( recruit training commanders) are putting them through is nothing to what Americas enemies will do.
I was in Desert Storm when my ship found out we were in a minefield. ( We found out when 2 other nearby ships ran over and they went KABOOM!) . The was several hours of going in reverse while waiting for attack from someone. The attack didn’t happen but the terror was sure there. The training definitely works. We never had any training like this. I learned everything after I got to my first ship.

If you're thinking about joining but scared of boot camp, don't be. I joined August 2017, I'm on my 5th year now, and I forget I even went to boot camp sometimes. It's only 3 months out of your whole life. You'll probably even miss it a little. If you're not sure about making the Navy your career, that's fine, do your first contract and see where life takes you. Navy life has its ups and downs, but it's a neat experience, and the friends you'll make will be for a life time.

As an army vet, I'm impressed with all the hands on stuff here. This looks more fun and interesting than just marching, shooting, and physical training that I had to do on basic.

As a former ETR2 sailor from 1973, I'm amazed how much more in-depth and difficult USN boot camp is now.
I see mostly SN ranks graduating now than when I did. Back then it was mostly SA (seaman apprentice) with SN only for those with some college like me.

I got to ride along with AF academy students during I-Day, super interesting experience. Saw a few cry when the cadets were yelling at them, and I know the AF is known for not going as hard as other branches. Couldn't do it myself but very interesting to see it first hand.

@Lemi Phil Yes, the Army's NCO Corps is the best in the world, and that's not a joke. The United States Army has the most personnel to attend leadership schools like Ranger School, and the Army has a leadership course before making E5-E9 for every rank, BLC, ALC, SLC, MLC, and USASMA. The Army puts a huge focus on leadership.

Boot campnsure has changed since I went through in 1989. Some differences I can see are. We had to wait hours to call home on Sunday if you deserved it, no cell phones. Had to run everywhere if alone. Intensive training was called MASHING. The company camanders used to be a bit physical by pushing & shoving recruits that made mistakes. Love the new uniforms, we had to wear bell bottom jeans. 😆

Waiting hours to call home on Sunday’s is still the same (and for many Sunday’s, you don’t even get to call even then). That phone call they showed is just 1 minute to quickly tell someone you arrived safely & give them instructions about getting your box of clothes you’re mailing home. Yeah quite a few things have changed I went in in the late 90s and it was 14 weeks you had two weeks P Days that's where you got all your uniforms and all that crap none of that stuff didn't count once you did all that and successfully stencil all of your uniforms and then we did we started training the uniforms are totally different now we had the dungarees we still be able to stencil them and do the iron on crowa and stuff like that they don't even have that crap anymore they got all kind of different ball caps now the only time you wear your Dixie cup is with your dress whites which if you get orders to a tropical very hot place and you can wear your whites all year long if you you know a dress uniform wearing kind of dude if you're a maintenance guy then you'll probably want to wearing some Camis or some coveralls or something like that training started we had some pretty intense courses on water survival we had to procure a dummy which would we have to rescue it like it like it was a unconscious person we had to do swim qual and certain times we had to qualify both rifle and sidearm with live ammunition at the range all your shipboard firefighting and battle stations and all that stuff that's all stuff that you going to need to know how to do you need to know how to react to what's in the event of something that might happen while you're out to see all the other stuff you'll pick up as you go along but it was pretty intense when I went through I mean they didn't play around with the physical stuff you had to be able to keep up or if you couldn't keep up with the unit or if you couldn't do the requirements they set you back oh, you got put on the fat boy program and you professionally exercise for like 18 hours a day until you got it, actually my bunkmate and bootcamp when in in January we graduated in May and he didn't get to A school till almost July because you couldn't pass the PRT. All the other stuff like the hard learning the Hard Knocks stuff about people doing little little screw-up then they punish the whole the whole ship they're going to cycle you they used to make it rain they would call it for 2 hours it would do nothing but just beat the crap out of you with eight-count body-builders and burpees and just all kind of stuff and your we were in full dungarees with sweaters and overcoats on just sweating like crazy this was two hours a day minimum, I don't know how they convinced it down to eight weeks I don't know how you can learn all that stuff and make weeks it was 14 weeks when I went through and we still couldn't do everything all the way they cut a lot of stuff out a lot of stuff. Classroom time was probably just as equal as Hands-On stuff but we went really fast we skip some stuff that wasn't really important just because of the time restraints and that was the 14 weeks oh, I don't know what they're teaching now and eight weeks I mean it must be just tying shoes and stuff. Something that is a little more beneficial to the seaman recruit at the training facility would be to go ahead and schedule your departure and arrival at boot camp to be in the rather cold winter months it will lighten some of the physical stuff on you cuz a lot of the stuff you can't do is just way too damn cold like 40 below you have to wear a ski mask because your skin will literally freeze. That was the first time I've ever seen snow in my life oh, I'm from the deep south and I never felt cold like that that was ridiculous cold, Ludacris cold completely off of the reservation cold

@emily stallard the only time we got phone calls was right when we arrived to let a contact know that we have arrived safely, or if you had some sort of a medical issue that required contacting someone from back home or your family or your Physicians Group, other than that we got very very very few phone calls only when we went to the I can't even remember what the hell that place was now when we purchased some items we did it with the with the chitbooks we were able to make a quick call on a phone card then but it was very brief do they still use chits? It was a type of debit or credit that we used in place of cash or other means of monetary transfer it was just a little book you tear that like coupons out in it and it would have a value on it and they would total it up and then debit it against your pay stub wherever you had it depositing to

I went in in 1973. Damage control training was in an engineering space mock up with eight inches of water in the bilge and about three inches of fuel oil set ablaze. We had to put it out in a time limit I no longer remember. We had OBAs for breathing. Then they put us in another mock up with damaged piping, hull breaches, and strained flanges. When the water got up to our upper thorax they turned the lights out except for battle lanterns. When the water reached our chin we got to go out for a breather and then start over again until we could get all the leaks plugged before the water reached our chins. The gas chamber, yes they called it the gas chamber, was a compartment just large enough to allow our company (Company 136) standing room and the time interval after removing the gas mask was one minute. Our Company Chief (GMGC Tyndal) stood in there with us smoking a cigar. Being the "appointed" company medical Petty Officer I had to carry four or five out of the chamber before I could recover myself. We learned small arms with the good old M 14 and the 1911 model Colt .45 ACP, when we could disassemble the pistol in five minutes in the dark and then reassemble it correctly, again in the dark, we passed. Aside from the regular exercises as punishment we also had two special infraction routines. If at a personal inspection there was a ring in your white hat (a real easy thing to get in Florida) you got three hours of grinder work of fifty paces carrying a bucket of soapy water. At each end you did an about face and washed your white hat with a scrub brush. Woe to the recruit that ever called his rifle a gun. That got him three hours of grinder work with armed guard present which included an about face at each extreme and a loud repetition of, "Present arms, This is my rifle, (lay rifle on grinder and unzip and open fly lowering skivvies) this is my gun, (raise skivvies zip fly, present arms) this is for fighting, (place rifle on grinder, unzip fly and lower skivvies) and this is for fun, (raise skivvies and close fly)." Then fifty yards to the other extreme and repeat. I don't imagine that can be done anymore with female recruits on board!

It wasn't this insane when i went through in '02. I left exactly 20 years to the day. Came home about 4 weeks later because of an allergic reaction to Penicillin. We were still living in the 1950s buildings. No a/c in the summer, and no heat in the winter. About half the recruits on the base, i say half of them had Pneumonia. I caught it at least twice. 1:47 actually when i was there it was even less than that. it was roughly $560 for the first month because they took out a lot for clothing and expenses. (yup you paid to be there, the Navy doesn't pay you to live there. I had two Petty Officers, and the LT who overseen the entire building i was in.

I was in the marines from 04-12, in the marines they still take your uniforms, other clothing, all the hygiene and other things they “give” you out of your pay during boot camp. I don’t know if they still do that these days, but it sucked when I figured it out . Basically after 3 months you leave with about 1-2 Months pay, & they still TAXED you for what they took

The memories. It’s easy to forget some of those moments in boot camp all those years ago but this video helped some of them surface. It was an honor and a blessing to have the opportunity to join the service and go through that experience. It’s easy to forget who you was before the navy after everything that happens and the mindset that changes as you start to lead people. When I went through basic training we had to do all of the battle station scenarios across the entire base, not just in one central location. We had to run in formation to each location.

Boot camp was a nice team building exercise.

What they don't tell you is that it is every sailor for themselves in the actual fleet. This is a skill enforced and taught by the modern e7 to e9 crowd in the fleet with some exceptions here and there. It is all petty politics and red tape these days after boot camp.

Still boot camp was an interesting experience. Battlestations was pretty fun! Proudest moment of my life was graduating Great Lakes resort!

My boyfriend proudly served in the Navy for 5 years. He was an Electrician’s Mate (an EM2(SW/AW) specifically) aboard the USS WASP LHD1. Although he has told me stories of his time in boot camp, A School and C School, watching this gave me new insights as to what boot camp was like for him, and one more reason why he is so dedicated and goes above & beyond in everything he does! Went through boot late 2020 - mid covid, had to do it twice due to ring of fire and testing positive: greatest advice to anybody joining;
1. Be ready before you get there, get good at pushups and get good at running, you don't want to be the person who cant do a pushup and keeps your DIV in ITE for longer because "hooyah 0" - but if there is someone like that, dont judge them, help them.
2. Stay positive, no point being the negative one, lift people up and your RDCs will see that, they may not say it until the end (if at all) but if push yourself as well as help others succeed, thats what teamwork is, there is no I in the Navy.

3. Put yourself out there, go for leadership positions, you may get fired, and even if you do keep working hard and helping your DIV.
Lastly, don't step on the flags, and get good at peripheral vision.

I got to basic when we were doing rom on base and had to sit in a room for 2 weeks straight, barely able to talk to each other, move, and had nothing to do but fold and stow drills and bunk make up.

I disagree on volunteering for leadership roles. At least in 06, you didn't get anything for being arpoc or aroc (what ever terms they may be now). It was all risk no reward. You got punished if you messed up and if you did good it didn't matter. Everything you did in boot camp, stayed in boot camp.

I'd actually be interested in going back and trying the new MGM Ship. I'm pretty sure it's a lot better training than the original when I went through in 2006. Boot was easy for me since I was prepared.

Went thru boot camp in 1958 in San Diego. Much of it was familiar except the line handling. That’s not something most sailors will ever do. The battle stations seems better than what we had with USS Buttercup. Also we only did DC exercises during day. Overall interesting video. Lt Commander USN(Ret)

That introduction the recruits received off the bus rings very true, and it was then I decided I would never reenlist. I didn't, but I did my four years of service. At 65, I look back and realize the United States Navy has been a cornerstone of my life, and some of the best years I've known. Good luck recruits, and you Bugs best know those Red and Blue Ropers do nothing but yell at you for 2 months. Then nobody does. Best of luck, RM3 Howard

I just graduated sept 16, my advice to you is if you cannot run that mile and half in your certain time don’t come to boot camp or else your stay will be much longer but if you want to work on it do like 30 laps around the compartment at which will equal a mile and half. Besides that boot camp is probably one of the most easiest things you will do every thing else is really simple as long as you pay attention. I was slumpt in those classes tho 😂

In the Navy's boot camp, there are three division classes. The recruits in 100 divisions are your average sailors, 800 divisions are NSO/NSW contracted sailors, and the 900 divisions are musician sailors—or something like that. The recruits with NSO contracts share the same building and living quarters but have separate rooms, or divisions, as those with NSW contracts. Those with EOD, ND, and AIR are in a different division than those with SEAL and SWCC contracts. However, both wake up two hours earlier than any other division for DIVMO training conducted by current SEAL, SWCC, EOD, ND, and AIR enlisted sailors.

I went through boot camp in 1958 in San Diego. My company commander (Chief) was BMC Kocher who had been an American pow with a primarily British pow camp and he was a guest at the premier of the movie “ Bridge Over The River Kwai” in San Diego. He was quite a man and had a beautiful wife as I recall. I Googled his name and it came up as a prisoner who made it to shore after a torpedo sank his ship early in the war. I asked him if he was able to socialize withe the native girls and he told me seriously that ..” If they did not have a pocket full of food they were not of any use."

Being able to perform your duties during this type of high stress must be very difficult. I think at that point it's good to have the rest of your seamen in line. Giving verbal cues on what to do.

Wait till you arw operating on a carrier, attached to the airwing, deployed 8n a hotzone and ots night and flight ops is loading heavy ordenance, missiles, chasers, heat seekers, and coming back empty, and a few bullet holes, that when it gets real, thats when you start earning every penny, and the entire ship os crawling, and eveey amaginable aid, and resource on hand to counter a hit, ans damage control, battle stations going off bells and whistles sounding, thats when it critical that every body, for evwry need be in the area of op, and carry out taskings with no misstake, and no accident on a higjtened and reactively counter measure op that make a successfull mission and spot on air strike, and enforcement of whats gomma happen, nobody gonna poke at the 800 gorilla just occupiying whatever water we damd well please to. Meanwhile, we also are a rather great deterrant to anylawlessness that may want to highjack a container ahip, its a death warrant to try that when the Navy would just love to target practice.

I’m in the army and a lot of guys always say other branches basic training are easy but the hardest part in any branch isn’t the physical state of it but more of the mental part of it which is just being in a new environment you’ve never been in and being away from home and having to adapt to this new lifestyle that most people seem to forget when talking about these so hard off to these sailors.

I was in NJROTC in high school. I was able to do 2 tours of Great Lakes. I will say this, the food in the Galley, is AMAZING! I have stayed on base multiple times for drill competitions and a JROTC Leadership academy.

I enlisted 25 years ago. Based on this video, the Navy has really improved basic training. I never got to fire 9mm, just simulator m16. We had no model ship for Battle Stations.

I went to Great Mistakes in 96, and we trained on live rounds. And did several water survival courses, including a rescue swimmer who loved to puah peoplewho coupdnt jumpfeom high platform. We had to tread water, while rwmoving dungaree pants, tie off leg opwnings, trap water in the legs, and use to manuver 500 yrds.
It used to be real man. You had to acually suitup in real fire fighting gear, tow a line, man a high pressure hose and extinguish simulated ABC fire scenarios,
And handle cleae class D, and how to jettison the hazard. Every class and written progression examination also had just as much hands on. I had no idea i had placed the best groupings, and i was presented with an Experts medal for markmanship. I was going downrange as a practicum. I knew, and had be trained and was experienced since a i was a kid ahooting. So they dont shoot on the range anymore? Thats just not even

I wish I had this when I went through (the simulated ship part). I was a ships yeoman in bootcamp and I had to move a person from one division to another and I missed this training. When it came to battle stations I was lost. Biggest regret of bootcamp.

I went through Navy boot camp almost 16 years ago. Made it to First Class Petty Officer before getting selected for Officer Candidate School (OCS). I am now a Lieutenant flying the world’s deadliest airplane. I have a B.S in computer science, 2 Master degrees, and working on a PhD all on the Navy’s dime. I have been around the world multiple times, gained skills that I thought would have never been possible, and met shipmates who I will call family for the rest of my life. I have proudly dedicated my life to my country and the United States Navy and would do it all over again if I was given the opportunity. HOOYAH!!! 🇺🇸

Can you imagine how much more intense, and this is already hyper intense, boot camp was when there was a draft DURING war times?????? All the best to these and future volunteer recruits...I see in so many of their faces the quest for a better life from which they are coming from...they believed in themselves enough to get away from the streets as soon as they could. I hope they go forth and make something of themselves.

Very interesting how they install this one “team one fight” mentality in such short time and they when they hit the feet the first thing they tell them “no one is gonna care as much for you as yourself” and is right but in the sense that you have to watch yourself as an individual and not as a team anymore. I was on a command so BAD that the CO would come in hungover all the time. They would hold you down if you wanted to better yourself. Hell when I got out with a honorable discharge they gave me a RE code that said I was Dishonorable discharged

Do yourself a huge favor and report in shape. If you're in the Delayed Entry program you should already know your General Orders and PT test requirements. Arrive being able to demonstrate those proficiencies and all will be well.

Bootcamp is like being on an alien planet, as soon as I graduated most of the standards enforced didn’t apply- it was just stuff they made up to stress you out and test your functionability.

The key things you’ll learn that actually apply in the fleet is how to wear a uniform, how to recognize ranks, and how to do everything fast- from getting dressed to peeing and showering.

If you go in thinking what you experience there represents the fleet accurately, you’re gonna regret joining before you’ve even finished initiation.
