Retired EA1 here. 79-99. Best 20 of my life. So many great adventures and people.

Noteworthy is Seabees have billets at Camp David and there State Dept billets in my time.

Def some new equipment.

I helped stand up the former First Naval Construction Division and then the Navy’s Expeditionary Combat Command which 1NCD dissolved into. (Sad day for me as a civilian)

Keep up the good work bees. And my last two comments. “Was never a sailor, I was a SEABEE”, And was fortunate to serve a year onboard the former USNS Chauvenet TAGS 29. CMs n EAs.

Lastly. Prior to departing military and my 7 years at COMNECC, I have worked alongside many if not all the units discussed. I strongly encourage current Seabees to look into thrm.

Thank you for highlighting the Seabees as far too few people are aware of them. Daddy was part of one of the first classes at Davisville. He fought and built his way through the Pacific all the way to Hiroshima (where a group brought and operated generators to provide power to a heavily damaged, but still attempting to function hospital). Technically a welder and mechanic, he could do anything and was a living example of "Can Do". He was not only my hero, but my friends thought of him as invincible.

I went blind when I was 14 years old, therefore I never got the opportunity to serve in the military. When I was a kid I wanted to be a combat engineer, but as an adult and learning about the Navy Seabees, I’m not sure which way I would have gone. I think it would be really awesome if y’all did a combat engineer video and a comparison video comparing the Navy Seabees and combat engineers. To all the veterans thank you for serving, and to all of our active duty and future soldiers, airmen, Marines, and sailors thank you for what y’all do and what you will do. There are many more of those who wish that we could serve even though the opportunity was never given or taken from us.

Don't let him talk you into going into something other than what you want. Tell him you want to be a BU (or CE, or CM, etc.), and if he says there are no billets, leave, and tell him to call you when one opens up. You'll get a call soon. Especially if he's falling behind on his quota.

I spent six years with the Seabees as an EO from 1983-1989, went to My Tech school at Gulfport, served in a variety of locations and bases including Air Force, Army, and Marine Corp bases, They have such a rich and proud history, but are probably the least known unit in the military, Which is a shame because their accomplishments in history could fill a library.

My father was a SeaBee in WW2 in the 16th Battalion, Headquarters Co. He was on Nanumea, an atoll island that's part of the Ellice Islands. He and his company with Marine assistance moved the island natives to the end of the island to construct a landing strip from crushed coral for the B24 Liberator bombers and other smaller planes.

I loved being a UT in the Navy's Construction battalion! I learned alot. After my honorable separation from the military I was able to take those skills to the civilian sector and have a great paying career. One of the best choices I have ever made was to joining the Seabees! ACB-1, you guys kick azz!

I was a CE but was never in a Battalion. I was sent to a Public Works Department for an initial 2 years but because of the wind down of Vietnam and the gasoline shortages and the resulting recession I was just left there.
Before I was drafted I worked for Ma Bell, first in South Florida and then New York City during construction of the World Trade Center, a huge project.
During my time there I learned a great deal which certainly helped later on. I was initially in the electric department but eventually worked in the telephone exchange. I also spent some time in the power plant and for a while I was a clerk and I handled maintenance scheduling. Those last two developed into my best skills. I also picked up some knowledge about water treatment and sewage handling.
In 1985 I was laid off by AT&T due to the breakup of Ma Bell. I was able to start a company selling business telephone equipment and maintaining it. In the beginning I was a one man operation. I sold it, installed it and did everything else. The accounting skills I'd learned as a clerk were a big help as was the ability to plan and schedule work. The hours were long but I'd learned how to pace myself in the Navy. In Public Works we had an overnight watch handling emergency calls and then you had to work the next day, it was almost a 24 hour shift.
I credit the Navy and the Seabees in the department for giving me the opportunities to learn new things. It has all served me well in maintaining my own house and properties I own. I don't think you can get the education I got from the other services. I got a look at the Air Force while working at a base Nixon closed in two months. The Air Force left and abandoned the other federal services on the base lie the Coast Guard and the FAA. They left a short timer Sargent who I leaned only knew one thing about telephone equipment and never learned the whole system from the central office to the telephone at the end. The Army seems to do the same thing, break a trade down and only giving people one of the components for their whole career. And the person is not a leader. That's for another group who are like clerical and executive positions. Not so in the Navy. You learn the whole trade and you have a military leadership position.
Sometimes I get to talk to a curious young man and show him why the Navy is the best place to learn a trade than the other services. My service made it possible to be in the position I'm in now. 32 years in business and now comfortably retired. I was 19 years old when I went in and they had a lot more to do with my becoming a mature adult. I would have spent my time otherwise partying and being broke. My only regret is that I didn't go college and it's a small one. I did well without it.
It's difficult to get into the Seabees today. The Seabees have been cutback and they are being encouraged to go to a new rating, Master At Arms. I hear that there aren't many takers. You'd have to go to sea and Seabees aren't into blue water.

Hey guys, nice surprise, the Seabees are one of the best kept secrets of the entire US Navy. I recommend for anyone trying to become an officer in this unit, apply for the Navy Civil Engineer Program if you're in college or coming out of HS, it's an incredible deal!

@Ceylon what I'm saying is Seabees are quite well known, they aren't a sneaky or shady or secretive unit in the Navy. A lot of people knows them, they've been around since ww2 and helped form and man the UDTs, the predecessors of Navy SEALs.

I was encouraged to from EA school and was moving along and almost there when foolish decisions on my part landed me in my 1st visit to the “old man”. Finally straightened up after 2nd bust few years later. 10 paygrade (and seemed uniform changes) I still managed to retire a well trained EA1- but boy being a retired
O5 or 06 vice E6 makes a difference. Advancement was tough as an EA. I encouraged my guys once board eligible go for LDO or Warrant One of my EA3s made chief and I went to Camp David for his commission. He retired as a CWO4.

Of course wish IT stuff was around back then. But still have a passion for arch and civil engineering. CAN DO

I was a Seabee Reservist from 1992 to 1998, Tucson/Phoenix, AZ. Great Mistakes and Gulfport. I went into the Reserves to serve my country and learn construction as my father was a carpenter. I also joined to help with college tuition for my Business Degree from ASU. It was an awesome experience, and in retrospect, I wish I would have done active duty to get the full experience. The UCTs are similar to the disbanded UDTs, which helped formed the SEALs. Navy Seabees are awesome too, if I'm not mistaken, there was once where the US government contracted civilian construction companies to construct or clear something to create a canal or some sort, but they said it wasn't possible or couldn't be done, but Navy Seabees later got it done.

Happened a lot. 🤣. CAN DO. The difficult we did at once the impossible took a little bit longer. I retired out of Bangor Wash and we were doing a lot of renovation projects as contractors were losing $$ or making a killing and some wouldn’t bid on them. Bit different from standing up a base from scratch. I told my guys you’ll enhance your planning n estimating skills which is a great job on the outside. A good PMP who can keep a project on schedule and budget saves the company $$$$

My Dad was a Seabee from 68-70 Vietnam. He was hard but fair and loving man. Was a sharpshooter too. Navy wanted to send him to shooting school but color blindness ended that. He was in 74th Battalion out of Mississippi. He was in training during Hurricane Camille! Trial by fire! He spent is tour in Da Nang, Chu Lai, Quang Tri, and Tam Ky. Learned a lot from Dad. Wasn’t much he couldn’t do with a hammer and a torch! Miss you Dad.

The first time I heard of SeaBees was in high school, almost 50 years ago. I think one of my classmates dads was in the SeaBees and he wore something with that on it. Since then I have learned a lot about special forces. My dad was in the Navy during WW2, Pacific theater. Thank you for this information.

Agree. Did 79-99 and as an EA, I wouldn’t know how to use their current equipment. Fortunately, still with Dod and was with Seabees as a civilian before moving to current job where some projects involve the comm n IT of the equipment they use today.

Nothing like riding in back of deuce and a half or trying to get reception from a PRC 77 with that monstrous whip antennae (and metal piss pots before the Kevlar. Good times

As a former Navy Seabee (CE) I went aboard 6 ships and 1 sub. Total time my boots were on steel decks maybe 3 hours. Ship to shore power has its benefits…food. I am 34 years old. My father was a Seabee in the 80s, stationed in Sicily. Today, I was helping him with his medical documents, and saw his DD214. He has mentioned gufport MI. SeaBees do all the work at American embassies, built the base in Antarctica, and support Camp David the Presidents retreat. SeaBees have their own unit under Naval Special Warfare and deploy to support all the SEAL Teams and Boat teams not just DevGru. 22 years in the Navy, retired now, spent 18 as a SeaBee working in NSW. Best Job I Ever Had.

Seabees can be stationed at any base in the world not just at Seabee bases. Usually this will be in the form of a special detachment like a public works detachment.

As a former Seabee Steelworker 2nd class 05-08 and a former U.S. Marine (5811 MP) if you're looking for a trade that plays with weapons but doesn't have a brutal physical training regime join the Seabees.

Steelworker also includes. Weld repair and resurfacing of construction equipment assist CM's in repair also assist BU's in construction projects. Also assist UT's in their projects. Steelworker is the only "worker" in the Navy.😁👍

I was (am) a Seabee I was in NMCB3 from ‘84-‘89 and loved it, GD is right you’ll never be aboard a ship I was only on two walked across one to visit my brother on the other and then back across to the pier!

I Was stationed at Port Hueneme and completed my A school In Gulfport,MS. At that time, we were in school with Airforce, and Army folks. Most of our instructors were Air Force enlisted.
NMCB 40 is no longer in commission but was my NMCB. IHad a great time while at the same time hating life. You get paid to learn a trade, travel the world and learn so basic combat skills. Pretty cool.

I was an SW from 79-99. Serving in four consecutive battalions, I was heavily utilized in H Company in the QC Department due to my knowledge and experience. I really enjoyed being around the EAs, and if I had my career to do over, that's probably the rate I would choose. I also did three years doing QA work on government contracts. I helped EAs with desigining some smaller discretionary projects. I really liked that aspect of construction, being behind the scenes, figuring it out, drawing it up, and making it happen. I also learned alot about materials testing, doing compaction tests with nuclear densometers, obtaining concrete cylinders, soils testing, etc.

@L J Yes i would. It’s never too late- Today the Bees are training with the other branches, and although, i didn’t experience that, lately have been running into active duty airmen and soldiers and even retirees that trained and worked with the Seabees.
-guess what i’m saying is if it is too late for say “the Navy” (which i think is 30 something), you can look at another branch and still get to be around bees to jump from branch to branch to the Bees.

4 consecutive battalions. YIKES. LOL. i enjoyed my time with 3 and 4. (80-82 and 87-89) respectively as i did split tours.

I enjoyed being an EA- and I liked the SW and CE rates after that. met some sharp SWs who were gifted with working with metal.
NAS Bermuda was my 1st duty staton and we had a SW1 maybe a Chief, i don’t remember, come join us in PW Engineering and was an excellent draftsman and had a deep knowledge across the trades.

I grew up around plumbing and electrical and heating and was a plus.

I was a Seabee for 10 years, a CE! But truth be told, I did plumbing, concrete work, drove some equipment. You have to be flexible to be a Seabee (Semper Gumby).

I worked as apprentice for a guy who was an electrician with the SeaBees. He was no nonsense get your shit done fast and correctly kind of guy. I wish I would have stuck with the apprenticeship and got my Master Electricians license with him, but I couldn’t make ends meet with the pay from the apprenticeship.

He had a lot of fun stories that he told us heading out to job sites.

I'm a retired Steelworker who was stationed at an HT shop at Waterfront Operations at 32nd Street Naval Station, San Diego for my first three years. We serviced the tug boats, YOs, Oilers, Tiger Boats, etc. I learned some mad fabrication skills from HTs and got to do all the different welding processes from silver soldering, brazing, gas welding, MIG, TIG, to stick welding. Even did pipe fitting and learned how to target pipe. The Bees mostly stick weld, but I got a great rounded out experience with the HTs.

I was in the Seabees as a reservist for 3 years, then went active duty with the Marines for 5 years. Morale was a whooole lot better in the Navy.

I remember I read somewhere that they were able to accomplish a crucial project, I think it was creating canal or something. The US government contracted private construction companies to do it, but they all told that it couldn't be done, but when the Seabees did it, they got the job done. Since u were a Seabee, I would like to get some opinion from u if u don't mind, how do the former UDTs compare to the current UCTs? Like are they the same?

I am a recovering Seabee. Once a Seabee always a Bee. NMCB 62 as a CM3 homeport Gulfport MS 1983-1988, and spent 7 months at Camp David 1985 as someone perviously mentioned Roosevelt Rhodes PR and Okinawa also

The Seabees I met were crazy. The stories were during the building of bases while random indirect fire would come in. It’s for this reason Seabees and green side Corpsmen shit on the rest of us blue side Navy for deploying on ships.

@Morgan Young Yeah, I do remember ship company HMs saying that. It was funny seeing FMF qual’d ones (both shipboard and MEU) explain to me the differences. The funnier thing is they all advised, don’t even put in my package to cross rate, but instead get out and apply for an RN or PA program.

Saw these guys on my first of many deployments to Iraq,didn't know they fight too!!!!! They were building everything on the fob.2005 in Iraq was PURE HELL!!!!My battalion had 12 kias and 8 soldiers severely wounded who to be medevacked out.Not a fun time.

Was that NMCB 7? I believe they were involved in the Battle of Fallujah. NMCB 7 is one of my old battalions, but I retired in 99. Builder Chief Joel Baldwin was killed in Iraq, I think it was 2004, when one of our own army soldiers who was Muslim rolled a grenade in the Galley Tent. I served with BUC Baldwin. I didn't know him well, but I did know him. It was a real smack in the face to see his picture and name come up with the KIA.

The "down & dirty" of The Seabees is spending those wonderful mornings in 1986 on our Field Exercise at Fort Hunter Liggett eating a Pork Patty MRE for Breakfast because the Galley Tent was not ready yet.
I hated them but thinking of those nasty things still puts a smile to my face.
