Running Through the Desert
The U.S. Navy Seabees Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Well I think it all happened,
When I was three years old
The running man showed me a step,
That made me loose control
So I used it as a boy...
And when I grew up...
I never thought this running motion
Would bring me such luck
So I skanked it in the morning
And I skanked it in the night
It was then I decided that SKA would be my life
It cheered me up and it made me feel good
When it comes to skankin'
I think that everyone should.

I recall this girl I knew,
She always seemed so sad and blue
She never ever skanked this was
And look at where she is today
She would say I was retarded
And that would leave me brokenhearted
'Til I faced reality and I realized
This girl was not for me!
So I skanked it in the mornin'...
I skanked it in the night...
And when I was done I was feeling alright

You say I have to change,
Well what's with that?
You say to come inside but
There's no welcome mat
Will this game we're always playin' ever end
But would you want it,

If in the end we'd just be friends
Lookin' through the mirror

Overall Meaning

of life
I think we all can agree
That skankin' is the way to go
It's the cure for all misery

The lyrics to The U.S. Navy Seabees's song Running Through the Desert describe the singer's experience with skanking, a dance associated with ska music. The song takes us back to the singer's childhood when he first learned the "running man", a step associated with the dance. As he grew up, he incorporated the dance into his life and skanked in the morning and in the night. Skanking became a source of joy for him and he believed that everyone should try it.

The lyrics also describe a failed romance, in which the singer realized that the girl he liked did not share his love for ska and skanking. He eventually moved on, and skanking helped him feel better. The song portrays skanking as a positive force that can help one cope with the difficulties of life.

Retired EA1 here. 79-99. Best 20 of my life. So many great adventures and people.

Noteworthy is Seabees have billets at Camp David and there State Dept billets in my time.

Def some new equipment.

I helped stand up the former First Naval Construction Division and then the Navy’s Expeditionary Combat Command which 1NCD dissolved into. (Sad day for me as a civilian)

Keep up the good work bees. And my last two comments. “Was never a sailor, I was a SEABEE”, And was fortunate to serve a year onboard the former USNS Chauvenet TAGS 29. CMs n EAs.

Lastly. Prior to departing military and my 7 years at COMNECC, I have worked alongside many if not all the units discussed. I strongly encourage current Seabees to look into thrm.

Stay tough and stay strong Bees. This retired vet salutes yall.
