The original Urge lineup debuted in 1989 with the cassette-only Bust Me Dat Forty, followed a year later by the LP Puttin' the Backbone Back. After the addition of trombonist Matt Kwiatkowski, the group released 1992's Magically Delicious; later the group added trombonist/keyboardist Todd Painter and saxophonist/keyboardist Bill Reiter, and in 1993 recorded the live LP Fat Babies in the Mix. After Herschel and Malecek left the band in 1994, guitarist Jerry Jost and drummer John Pessoni joined the lineup, and subsequent touring with 311 helped The Urge win a number of new fans. The 1995 release of Receiving the Gift of Flavor was so successful that it brought the band to the attention of Epic's Immortal imprint, which reissued the LP in 1996.
After constant touring with the likes of labelmates Korn and Incubus, Master of Styles was released in 1998, containing the hit "Jump Right In" which featured singer Nick Hexum of 311.
Following the release of Too Much Stereo in mid 2000, the band toured for nearly a year before calling it quits. After the annual St. Louis Christmas shows, the Urge disbanded for the first time since they formed in 1987.
The band played several Midwest reunion shows from 2003-2005 that included a headlining spot at Pointfest, a large semi-annual outdoor rock festival in St. Louis. Frontman Steve Ewing has made several solo records while guitarist Jerry Jost formed LucaBrasi, featuring former members of Adair and Helmet. The other members still resided in St. Louis and are involved in several musical projects.
On July 15, 2011, St. Louis' KPNT 105.7 FM proclaimed that the Urge would be headlining Pointfest XXIX on September 10, 2011, marking their sixth festival appearance. The Urge also confirmed that they are once again an active band and they have been recording new music in the studio for several months.

Yeah we're pickin' up speed
Never gonna give it up, definitely
Take it to another level
Grab the shovel, and scoop the rest out of my way
Giddy like a school boy, got the tools boy
Never play the unemployed
Comin' with velocity, with the needles in the red
Straight to Hell, that's where I sent 'em
x3
Straight to Hell
Here I come again, bring another jam
With the mic in my hand, yeah you know we slam
Movin' forward with momentum
Straight to Hell that's where we sent 'em
Sometimes freaky, sometimes we get nice
If it feels good sometimes we do it twice
Or three times or four times or five or six
Rewind the tape, get me back in the mix
We'd like to thank our friends for one hell of a time
We hope it never ends
Crack a little smile when it's time to get high so
Come on!
Straight to Hell, that's where I sent 'em
x3
Straight to Hell
Allow me to illustrate
And paint the perfect picture of the perfect perpetrator
Make me look down on the up-stroke
Cause I got no love for the evil immitator
I live to hear the people yellin' and screamin'
And clappin' and toe-tappin', ain't gonna be no gum-flappin
To what? to shun
To what? to shun
To what?? Yeah, to just turn away
Straight to Hell, that's where I sent 'em
x3
Straight to Hell
In "Straight to Hell," The Urge sings about their determination to keep moving forward, never giving up, and always striving to reach greater heights. The group's frontman is feeling elated at the beginning of a new year as they pick up steam and speed. He confidently proclaims that they will never give in and will continue to take their music to another level. The singer is filled with youthful exuberance as he grabs his tools and scoops out anything in his way.
The members of The Urge never want to be out of work or unemployed, so they're always coming up with new ideas and sounds to keep their careers going. As they move forward, they push their limits to the red line and feel like they're losing their sanity. They're so committed to their craft that they're willing to go straight to hell if it means maintaining their momentum and never losing their edge.
