The Taste of Ink
The Used Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Is it worth the can you even hear me
Standing with your spotlight on me
Not enough to feed the hungry
I'm tired and I felt it for awhile now
In this sea of lonely
The taste of ink is getting old
It's four o' clock in the fucking morning
Each day gets more and more like the last day
Still I can see it coming
While I'm standing in the river drowning
This could be my chance to break out
This could be my chance to say goodbye
At last it's finally over
Couldn't take this town much longer
Being half dead wasn't what I planned to be
Now I'm ready to be free

So here I am it's in my hands
And I'll savor every moment of this
So here I am alive at last
And I'll savor every moment of this

Won't you think I'm pretty
When I'm standing top the bright lit city
And I'll take your hand and pick you up
And keep you there so you can see it
As long as you're alive and care
I promise I will take you there
We'll drink and dance the night away
We'll drink and dance the night away

So here I am it's in my hands
And I'll savor every moment of this
So here I am alive at last
And I'll savor every moment of this
Savor every moment of this

As long as you're alive
Here I am
I promise I will take you there

As long as you're alive
Here I am
I promise I will take you there

Won't you think I'm pretty
When I'm standing top the bright lit city
And I'll take your hand and pick you up
And keep you there so you can see it
So long as you're alive and care
I promise I will take you there
So long as you're alive and care
I promise I will take you there

So here I am it's in my hands
And I'll savor every moment of this
So here I am alive at last
And I'll savor every moment of this

Savor every moment of this
Savor every moment of this

Overall Meaning

The Taste of Ink by The Used is a song about feeling trapped and tired of living the same day over and over again. The first verse talks about being in the spotlight but feeling unheard and unnoticed, and the taste of ink (a metaphor for being stuck in a rut) becoming old. The chorus is about taking control and breaking free from the routine, and savoring the moments of freedom that come with it. The second verse talks about the desire to leave town and start anew, promising to take someone along who cares and wants to experience life with them. The song ends with a repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the importance of enjoying each moment and living fully.

One possible interpretation of the song is that it is about the struggle to break free from societal expectations and live life on your own terms. The taste of ink could represent conformity and the pressure to conform, while the desire to break free and savor every moment highlights the importance of individuality and being true to yourself. The line about taking someone along could represent the desire for human connection and the importance of having someone to share life's experiences with.

Just sitting here at 38 years old, engineering some software, being an adult. I don't know why, but I thought about The Used for the first time in decades. Put on a box full of sharp objects, was like being back in high school again. Just pure nostalgia. Look over in the related, see The Taste Of Ink. "I remember this song I think?". Click it, that opening lick happens, and I just stop what I'm doing and listen, crying by the end of it. It's like one of my deepest memories that picked over 20 years to lay dormant and then all of the sudden knock me over. I remember everything now, every little detail of that time. It's absolutely insane how much gets tied to songs, and apparently forgotten until the song finds it's way back.
