Blow It Up
The Vaccines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Okay, I could live without it
Were you ever my age? No, I doubt it
A Native American feather
Degenerates look better in leather

Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow it up, blow it up, blow it up

Trippin' out is fun on the weekend
But you don't feel as young with a girlfriend
I'm bored of tryna deal with your ego
Play it like that and it will though

Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow it up, blow it up, uh-huh

Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow, blow, blow it up

Blow, blow, blow it up
Blow it up, blow it up, blow it up

Overall Meaning

The Vaccines's song "Blow it up" is a thrilling and energizing song that seems to be about youth culture and rebellion. The song opens with the lines, "Okay, I could live without it. Were you ever my age? No, I doubt it." These lines seem to be a challenge to those who try to understand the youth culture of today. The songwriter is saying that only those who are young can really understand the thrill of being young and reckless.

The next lines, "A Native American feather. Degenerates look better in leather", could be interpreted in a few different ways. It could be a reference to the Native American headdress, which has been appropriated and worn by many as a fashion statement, leading some to accuse them of cultural insensitivity. Alternatively, it could be a reference to the value placed on looking cool and tough, with "degenerates" being a term of self-deprecating humor often used by punk and alternative rock fans.

The chorus, "Blow, blow, blow it up", is a call to action, urging listeners to rebel and push the limits. The lines "Trippin' out is fun on the weekend, but you don't feel as young with a girlfriend. I'm bored of tryna deal with your ego. Play it like that and it will go" could be interpreted as a warning about the dangers of excess and the importance of self-awareness. The songwriter seems to be saying that while it's fun to indulge in these reckless behaviors on occasion, it's important to stay grounded and conscious of one's own mortality, otherwise, you run the risk of becoming a caricature of yourself.

Overall, the song seems to be a celebration of youth culture, with all of its excesses and rebelliousness, while also acknowledging the importance of finding a balance between fun and responsibility.

oh come on! Dont get me wrong i absolutely love the Vaccines, and along with the Lumineers they are the best current band.... but as for the best band of all time- it has to be The Rolling stones, Led Zeppelin and Fleetwood Mac :)

@iansomething

As a massive Beatles fanatic, they topped my most played on my itunes for as long as I can remember. Then along came the Vaccines. Backpacked all across America with your album on repeat, and now the tune "Blow It Up" (storming ahead with 174* plays) now sits comfortably number 1. Up front at Lollapoolza was pretty sweet too. Keep the good shit flowing lads!
