Wreckin' Bar
The Vaccines Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Ra, ra, ra, ra, yeah, you are
Growin' up, I'm twice the man
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, I am
The angels gave F. Scott Fitzgerald
The evening news and the morning herald
I know they're from very far
"Where you been?" You can say
Hey, hey, hey, hey, yeah, you may
That might seem a bit below
No, no, no, it's funny though
Let's go home, I think we oughta
I know you're your mother's daughter
Well brought up and royal blue
And I haven't got the time for you
Finger pointing, presupposing
Watch out, man, that door's a-closing
This is what you get when you turn your back
A clear blue sky turning dirty black
The opening lines of The Vaccines' Wreckin' Bar describe a reckless and alluring woman who is the life of the party. The singer is drawn to her, admiring her carefree attitude and infectious energy. He feels as though he is twice the man when he is with her, suggesting that she brings out the best in him. However, he also acknowledges that she is trouble, likening her to a wrecking ball that tears down everything in its path.
The chorus references F. Scott Fitzgerald, a famous American author known for his writings about the excess and decadence of the Jazz Age. The mention of angels giving Fitzgerald the news is a nod to his novels, which often featured wealthy, glamorous characters who engaged in reckless behavior. The chorus then transitions to a French phrase, "Les femmes, les bars, c'est pas une joie," which translates to "Women, bars, it's not a joy." This line seems to be a cautionary reminder that while the singer is enjoying himself in the moment, there will likely be consequences down the line.
In the verses that follow, the singer addresses the woman directly, asking where she has been and making a lighthearted joke about how it might have been beneath her to associate with him. However, he eventually acknowledges that their relationship is not meant to last. He views her as a distraction, something to enjoy in the moment but ultimately leave behind. The song ends on a ominous note, with the singer warning of the dangers that come from turning your back on something you can't resist.

I remember listening to the FIFA soundtrack as I do every year, and this song left me breathless. Just stunned silence. What the FUCK was that? Let me listen again and again and again. I became a Vaccines fan right there. Recently saw them in concert for the first time and they were as good as I hoped. What a fun band.
