Hi guys, I did some cleanup animation for Skullgirls and let me tell you what a sanity-shredding nightmare it is attempting to animate the character Double. A writhing mass of body parts, faces, eyeballs and undulating flesh, imagine having to animate that traditionally by hand and keeping every writhing tentacle, loose foot, and sopping eyeball on model . I don't think I will ever have the opportunity to animate a more complex, mind-boggling character for as long as I live.

Depends on what it is really, 2D is sooo much slower to animate than 3D in a lot of aspects.... If one were to include rigging and such, it would likely be days or weeks, but a walk cycle can take mere minutes once the setup is in place :) like the eyes, their twitching was likely done in an automated fashion, saving time/horror for the devs lol

Maybe I’m weird but I actually find that trypophobia thing really badass and even very pleasing from an artistic chaotic point of view especially rom. It’s imperfect and random structure fitting into a mostly symmetrical frame is genuine inspired artwork that I could only hope to achieve someday. Also, that demon from dragon age is sweet. And the hag from Witcher was a thrill especially when you finally kill them it feels that much better because it’s so grotesque. Truly it’s an art form and I think it should be respected in video games and in nature. I would happily spend my time drawing and creating these “horrors” as you so bafflingly claim them to be. Yo but the video is good and I’m a fan of your regular content lists. Love the lists.

I literally started to feel nauseous while I was controlling the blob in Inside. And it was amazing. It made me love the game so much more. I rarely get physically affected like that while even watching films and tv shows. That never happened to me before while playing a video game, and it probably never will happen again.The game also has the most amazing sound design I’ve ever experienced. Yup.
I have a degree in 3D animation, who is still trying to break into the industry, but, we cover literally 1 enemy typically because we have to study that ONE monster, animal, person, etc. to the point of on-sight knowledge of what it is that thing is doing.

So some animations can take a day, some a week, some a month, depending on how complex the model is and the animation required.

Honestly, when it comes to drowning animations, I think Link has it worse than Mario. Link models tend to have more detail and articulation in their framework compared to the standard Mario model, allowing for more flexibility and at times - realism. And if you think that sounds morbid, some of the more convincing drown-animations, come from the Child Incarnations of Link. 😖

The enemy from Final Fantasy XIII found at Taejin's Tower called Gelatitan. I have an aversion to anything slimy, and this enemy made me feel physically nauseas unlike anything else I've ever seen in a video game. The way it was animated to move and how it shook when attacking and being attacked was abhorrent.

@TheGuardDuck I completely understand about hip pain. I was born with 3 different genetic conditions so could say I hit the jackpot lol. Ehlers Danlos syndrome, knackered discs plus femoral anteversion with compensatory external tibia torsion so had to have derotational osteotomies on both femurs when I had stopped growing. Now instead of my kneecaps looking at each other/out of line with my feet and hips now my kneecaps are in line with my hips and my feet are 45°pointing outwards. Was told by my spinal specialist that my right hip in particular will soon need replacing due to frequent dislocations, makes going to see the gynaecologist fun 'Hang on while I put my hip back in' CLUNK 'That's better'. Nurse went green but the doctor also had very mild EDS so wasn't bothered lol. The funny thing about my spine is that I'm one and a half inches shorter than I was when I was younger but I'm long-ribbed, only an inch between my lowest floating rib and the top of my pelvis at the side so I have to decide under or over with my ribs when I lean to one side other rib and pelvis meet.

@Sally Philpin I've got some loose joints that don't hurt at all. My hands bend 180 degrees flat against my wrists, and I could pop my knees in and out of joint when I was younger. Add that to other random stuff, and I'm a mess too. Not so much pain, fortunately. Had a hip get strained during traction, however, and it's given me chronic pain since. But that's a bit different, as it happened to me, not grown that way.

I am very weak, tho. And skinny. And short. And have a warped torso...

@TheGuardDuck If those of us wore braces on the joints that try to run away we would be covered in them and actually it's not a good idea to wear braces all the time as that would make our muscles weaker so our joints would dislocate even more. I have Ehlers Danlos syndrome, fibromyalgia and bulging discs in my neck and lower spine and I'm on enough painkillers to knock out a small elephant. DISLOCATIONS BLOODY HURT!!!!

I remember doing an experiment in far cry 2 where I tried finding all the healing animations. Burning causes you to pat out the fire, getting shot means you pull out bullets, falling from heights means you fix your broken ankle.

But drowning??? You pull out rebar from your hip, or yank out a nail from your hand, or pull out some thick wire from your knee. Damn.

The word for Lisa's tech movement is definitely twitching - I've had somewhat similar movement in my neck sometimes due to Dystonia, mainly on my right side only. Definitely a 1 out 5 star life experience to have happen to you if you get overly tired and/or overly stressed at random points.

The Flood infecting a new host in Halo 3 is pretty grisly. It makes you think how long the animators spent trying to decide exactly the right spot for the tentacles to erupt from the new host as it's limbs spasm uncontrollably.

Unfortunately for the character in FarCry, that dislocation probably hurt a hell of a lot more after resetting. At least that's my experience with dislocated digits. And yes injuries with joints do make a wet crunch, it sounds like someone tearing a fish in half.

Personally, the top ones that would have made me rethink my life as video game animator would be in the original Tomb Raider games where you drown/fall a long distance. The animations are way worse than Mario 64 when it comes to drowning, and watching Lara slump into a pile of DEAD traumatized me as a kid.
Another "oh god why" would be Dante's Inferno.
Demon babies crawling out of nipples. Nuff said.

@SkellyInMyCloset Yea, animating the Lurker must have been far more emotionally taxing for Dead Space's animators than Mario drowning...
Imagine being the poor sod or on the team of poor sods tasked with not only animating a baby corpse running around on tentacles but also having to animate all of the same baby corpse's intestinal tentacles wriggling around, the attack animations and the damage and death animations. Some poor animator had to decide what a dead baby would look like when it was shot with high energy plasma bolts, just let that sink in for a moment.

The fact that these animations disturbed some people shows how much care the animators put into them. These animators wanted to create something that would get a reaction from people, as well as something that they could be proud of. The animations didn't ruin their day- it made their day knowing they could ruin someone else's.

I've heard that there where some real horror stories from Dead Space... I believe at least one animator almost burned out from spending weeks or even months looking at reference material for tumors, wounds, gangrene, infections, etc.

here's something you guys forgot (maybe for good) is the "doors" in Halo 3 on the cortana level.
The animators actually said that they hated all the time put into the butthole doors because they had to look at many, MANY sources of actual buttholes to get it right. I feel so bad for them

After having to relocate my left thumb 3 times (once you pop, you cant stop) over the years, I can say without a doubt there would be more screaming, crying and followed by not being able to actually use the digit, let alone most of the hand properly for several painful weeks. At least they got the angle more or less right.

Everything enemy in Hunt: Showdown apart from your fellow Hunters. All well animated, although Jane would probably rather watch the cycle of the Avtomat as one uses it to gun down The Spider rather the watching the animations of said spider demon.

Every time they say something like “a lot of really hard work to animate” I always think “you have no idea”.
Everything is so painstakingly complicated and takes forever just to do a little detail that probably no one will ever notice.

As someone who loves art but can't do it very well, I can assure you the animators were having a field day with this. Like gross stuff is so fun to create. Like between the artists and the animators, everybody was probably excited to create all of these.

I think Jim Sterling did a video once about game animators having to go to therapy because they had to research on actual death videos to make game deaths as gruesomely realistic as possible.

The scene when you turn into a huddle in Inside is still, to this day, the most "What the bloody hell is happening right now!" moment I've ever experienced in a video game. That was brilliant.
Also, you forgot The last of us (both parts), which shows you in detail your character being shot, stabbed or munched at (not to mention the Bloater's kill animation which looks...Unpleasant, to say the least)...I hope the animator didn't have to make all of them back to back.

Tesleen's death scene in the Shadowbringers expansion of Final Fantasy XIV will probably forever haunt my nightmares. Wonder how the animators behind that one felt while making it.

You forgot one. The imprisoned human animations from Doom Eternal.
It is disturbing to say the least. If you weren’t a demon slaying badass then Doom would be absolutely horrifying.

Also honorable mention to the person who had to animate the way bloodbugs in Fallout 4 attach to your face and stick their proboscis in you just to then spit that blood at you after you finally got them off.

Gravity Rush has some cool threatening enemies that were still cartoonish and child friendly. That is until one character turns into a giant fleshy mass with screaming faces all over, which can only be beaten by throwing your body at the numerous eyes. It was a HUGE deviation from its usual art style
