The Vanden Plas formed in 2001 as a brotherly duo of Peter and Richard Reynolds, bespoke makers of luxurious burbling electronica of Borough Market, London. They had remarkable but short lived success with their first record, "Santa Margherita", a song which uses elements from a 25p charity shop record called "Margherita" by Massara. Independiente released the record as a 12" in July 2003 with The Vanden Plas's "Let's Stop" as the B-side (this record was later mistakenly listed as "Let's Stop Marx" on the Death Disco compilation). Championed by Pete Tong and remixed by Derrick Carter and Peace Divison, the record was a club hit but never released as a CD single. The Vanden Plas recorded a remix of "Anything" for labelmate Martina Topley-Bird but they split soon after and released no further singles. Richard continued with The Vanden Plas and in 2004 remixed Uniting Nation's Top 10 single "Out Of Touch" and in 2005 recorded the soundtrack for a testicular cancer charity film by Everyman featuring Rachel Stevens of S Club playing with a plum.
In 2008 Peter concentrates on digital design from his base in Montreal, Canada and in London Richard propagates the idea of illicitly cultivating public space from his website http://www.guerrillagardening.org

The Vanden Plas Lyrics

From a hundred ten
Miles in a shade
And the rain keeps failing down
On a summer night parade
I'm asking
Who is gonna do this
Little girl o' mine
When she needed me to stay
I'm praying
Anytime and any day
I said lady
You gave your light away
Anytime and any day
The tears will fall
For my lady
He's a lonesome renegade
Nobody understands
But addicted from the lust
To take little girls
Again and again
Doctor can you tell me
Why you set him free
So he was there
When she needed me to stay
I'm praying
Anytime and any day
I said lady
You gave your light away
Anytime and any day
The tears will fall
For my lady
Who is gonna hold you
There in heaven
Who will wash away
All the tears
Who is there to tell you
When you're seven
Singing you a song
For your birthday
Do you love your mummy
And your daddy
Do you feel the hole
In our hearts
I know sometimes
My own love executes me
Someday I will drown
In my own tears
I'm praying
Anytime and any day
I said lady
You gave your light away
Anytime and any day
The tears will fall
For my lady
The Vanden Plas's song "Anytime" tells a story of a man who was not able to be there for the little girl o' mine, who needed him to stay. He regrets that he wasn't there to help her and now he is praying and asking who will take care of her. The man is also angry with the system that sets free the person who hurt the little girl. He is frustrated and feels helpless in this situation.
The song also talks about the struggles of a lonesome renegade who is addicted to taking advantage of little girls. The man wonders why the doctor set him free, and he was not there for the little girl when she needed him the most. The lyrics then take a turn to talking directly to the little girl who is no more. The man wonders who is holding her in heaven and who is washing away her tears. He talks about the hole in their hearts and how he will someday drown in his own tears.
The song portrays the pain, frustration, and helplessness of a man who wasn't able to protect a little girl. The lyrics are powerful, and the melody adds to the intensity of the song. The Vanden Plas has done an excellent job of using music to convey emotions and tell a story.
