After finishing their studies the remaining members became more serious about the bands potential. Around May of 2006 the Vans gained the help of Luke Juniper on lead guitar and Vern Campo on drums. After competing in band competitions such as NCBC, The Best of the Best Bog Band competition and the Garage to V band competition, the Vans recorded their debut EP and released it independantly on the 14th of April 2007.

Để ơ con ơ bắt ốc ơ
Ơ hái rau mẹ nhờ
À ơ bắt ốc ốc nhảy lên bờ
Hái rau ờ rau héo ơ
À ơ mẹ nhờ ơ mà chi con
The above lyrics are actually a Vietnamese folk song that The Vans covered in their own style. The lyrics roughly translate to "Oh Mother, please don't hit the child, let him catch snails and pick vegetables. Oh, catch the snails and climb up the bank. Pick the vegetables, the vegetables are withered. Oh Mother, please help the child."
The interpretation of these lyrics is widely debated. Some see the song as a child's request to be shown love and compassion from their mother, while others argue that it is a commentary on the struggles of rural life and the hard work that is required to survive.
Regardless of interpretation, The Vans' version of the song is an interesting fusion of traditional Vietnamese folk music and modern pop elements. The use of the traditional Vietnamese stringed instrument, the đàn tranh, provides a beautiful and unique sound in contrast to the contemporary drum beat and synths. The song's lighthearted melody and catchy chorus make it an enjoyable listen for anyone, regardless of their understanding of the lyrics.
