Jesus For The Jugular
The Veils Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

How do you preach the word if you don't know how to read?
They hold your soul once you sign the deed
Would the sun still rise if there's no one 'round?
Would the fox be as quick if he hadn't his hound?

Let him go from me

This whole world spins with her feet off the ground
She'll make the stars applaud when she sits back down
There's a bulls blooded fountain in the pit of a moan
That I'll summon an eclipse on my way to the lord

Let him go from me

Jesus for the jugular, one at a time
Ain't nobody ever gonna ever have to die

Overall Meaning

The opening lyrics of the song Jesus For The Jugular by The Veils have a theological connotation that probes the question of how one can become a preacher without mastering the Scriptures. It stresses the significance of being knowledgeable about the word of God before embarking on any divine mission. The second line implores caution and mindfulness when entering into contractual agreements that can be detrimental spiritually, personality-wise, or financially. The next two lines, "Would the sun still rise if there’s no one 'round? Would the fox be as quick if he hadn't his hound?" are rhetorical, raising the idea that everything in life exists for a reason and performs specific functions, hence the importance of having a support system. The chorus, "Let him go from me," seems to be a melancholic cry from the singer aimed at an entity he wished to dispel from his life, probably a stubborn demon or an unyielding circumstance that hindered his progress.

In the second verse, the lyrics become more profound, drawing analogies between the mysteries of the universe and the singer's predicament. The line, "This whole world spins with her feet off the ground," creates a sense of disorientation, suggesting that everything is not what it seems. The following phrase, "She'll make the stars applaud when she sits back down," could refer to a charismatic figure or someone with extraordinary abilities who commands adulation. The next line, "There's a bull's blooded fountain in the pit of a moan," seems to describe a cult, with the singer being the de facto leader who can evoke mystical experiences. The final phrase, "That I’ll summon an eclipse on my way to the Lord," draws the veil on what the singer wishes to achieve, which is a powerful spiritual epiphany that would enable him to have a divine encounter.

The Veils are a London-based indie/alternative band fronted by lead singer and songwriter Finn Andrews. Head of Rough Trade Records Geoff Travis has referred to Finn as "a young but maturing real artist in the vein of Nick Cave and David Bowie".
-- Nux Vomica (2005–06) --
Andrews left the UK early 2005 and embarked on a solo tour of America and Japan, eventually returning home to New Zealand where he found a new direction for the band. He spent the summer there rehearsing with high-school friends Liam Gerrard (keyboards) and Sophia Burn (bass) in Liam's bedroom, soon amassing an album's worth of material. When the trio returned to London they were joined by Dan Raishbrook (guitar) and Henning Dietz (drums), who completed the new line-up. They began recording sessions with producer Nick Launay in Los Angeles in early 2006. The resulting album 'Nux Vomica' had a darker, far heavier and more complex sound, augmented by string arrangements by ex Lounge Lizard Jane Scarpantoni, but also a newly found, highly animalistic energy. Lead singer Finn Andrews shows "rougher" and more experimental vocals on many of the songs such as 'Not Yet' and 'Jesus for the Jugular'. Two singles were released from the album: "Advice for Young Mothers to Be" (4 September 2006) and "One Night on Earth" (15 April 2007). Nux Vomica featured on 16 English and American critics' best of the year lists in 2006
