Cool It Down
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody took the papers
And somebody's got the key
And somebody's nailed the door shut
That says, "hey, what you think that you see?"
But me, I'm down around the corner
You know I'm lookin' for Miss Linda Lee
Because she's got the power
To love me by the hour
Gives me double you L-O-V-E

Hey baby, if you want it so fast
Don't you know that it ain't gonna last
Of course, you know it makes no difference to me

Somebody's got the time, time
Somebody's got the right
All of the other people
Tryin' to use up the night
But not me, I'm out on the corner
You know I'm lookin' for Miss Linda Lee
Because she's got the power
To love me by the hour
Gives me double you L-O-V-E

Ooh, hey, if you want it to last
Don't you know, honey, you can get it so fast
But of course, you know it makes no difference to me

Oh-oh, you'd better cool it down
You know you'd better cool it down
You know you'd better cool it down
You know you'd better cool it down

Cool it down, yeah
Ah, ah-ah
Ah, ah-ah-ah, ah

Oh, hey, if you want it so fast
Now lookie-look, baby, don't you want it to last
But of course, you know that it makes no difference to me

Oh, you'd better cool it down
Now baby, better cool it down
Don't you know you'd better cool it down
You know you'd better cool it down
You'd better cool it down

Oh, baby, cool it down
You'd better cool it down

Overall Meaning

In The Velvet Underground's "Cool It Down," the beginning lyrics create an image of secrecy, confusion, and frustration. Somebody has taken something from someone else, and somebody else has nailed the door shut. There's a sense of confusion and uncertainty, as if nobody really knows who has the key to the situation. Yet, the singer is focused on finding "Miss Linda Lee" - someone who has the "power to love [him] by the hour" and give him "double you L-O-V-E."

As the song continues, there's a contrast between the singer's desires and the desires of others. Other people are "tryin' to use up the night," but the singer is content to search for Linda Lee. Again, the lyrics point towards an urgency in finding love, and the promise that Linda Lee can provide the singer with that love.

The repeated phrase "you'd better cool it down" serves as the chorus, reminding the singer (and the listener) to slow down and approach their desires with caution. The lines "if you want it so fast / don't you know that it ain't gonna last" underscore the idea that taking things too quickly or impulsively can have negative consequences. Overall, "Cool It Down" is a song about yearning for love and the risks and rewards that come with pursuing it.
