Foggy Notion
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's over by the corner
Got her hands by her sides
They hit her harder harder harder
Till they thought she might die

Well I got a foggy notion,
Do it again
Over by the corner,
Do it again
I got my calamine lotion baby,
Do it again
I got a foggy notion,
Do it again

She made me do something
That I never did before
I rushed right down
To a flower store
I bought her a bundle
A beautiful batch
Don't you know something,
She sent 'em right back

Sally Mae, Sally Mae,
Sally Mae, Sally Mae

Sally Mae, Sally Mae,
Sally Mae, Sally Mae

Overall Meaning

The Velvet Underground's song Foggy Notion is emblematic of the band's reputation for pushing the boundaries of rock and roll with subversive lyrics and experimental soundscapes. The song's central narrative focuses on a woman who is being physically abused by someone off-screen. Despite her obvious pain, the singer only seems to be interested in his own selfish desires, as he repeatedly asks to "do it again" while holding his calamine lotion.

The lyrics of Foggy Notion are deliberately vague, but they speak to the themes of violence and powerlessness that were prevalent during that era. As the song progresses, the singer reveals that he has done something that he has never done before: he rushes to a flower store to buy a bouquet of flowers for his lover. However, she sends them right back, perhaps as a way of rejecting his empty romantic gesture.

Such a simple guitar riff, yet will live forever. What a great sound! No drum fills or rolls, just Mo Tucker pounding away!!✌

They strangest four people to ever in a band. And that doesn't even involve Doug Yule, Andy Warhol and Nico.

@barrett402 You sure about that? According to an article by Paul Williams in the Velvet Underground Companion Book, it's about trying to rouse a girl from an amphetamine overdose. Yet what's being described, while it could be a heroin overdose being described, it really doesn't fit a meth or speed overdose.
