The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I got fever in my pocket
You know I gotta move
Hey babe, I guess I'm falling in love

I got fever in my pocket
Down to my shoes
Oh babe, I guess I'm falling in love
I got in my pocket, hey babe
Everything that I can have
I've got thing in my ?loveline?
It's gonna work out fine
It's gonna be allright

I gotta move
You got yours on your side
Hey now babe, I guess I'm falling in love

I got fever in my pocket
Down to my shoes
Oh babe, I guess I'm falling in love

You'd better move it on sweet babe
Hey on down to your shoes
Things they're right, mama
You know it'll work out fine
Hey you gotta lose

Got hand in my pocket
You know it work also(?)
Oh babe, I guess I'm falling in love
I've got ankles in my breasts
I find it's hard to lose
Oh babe, guess I'm falling in love

Oh babe, guess I'm falling in love
Oh babe, guess I'm falling in love

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Velvet Underground's "Guess I'm Falling in Love" are not particularly verbose or intricate, but they do convey a simple idea - the singer is experiencing feelings of love and desire, characterized as a fever that drives him to move and act. The repetition of the phrase "I got fever in my pocket" underscores this idea, and the use of "Hey babe" as a refrain throughout the song suggests that the singer is addressing his lover directly, perhaps trying to persuade her to reciprocate his feelings.

The line "I've got ankles in my breasts" is particularly interesting, as it's an example of the cryptic and unconventional imagery for which The Velvet Underground's songwriting is known. It's not entirely clear what this phrase is meant to convey, but it could be interpreted as a reference to the physical sensations of arousal that are coursing through the singer's body.

Overall, "Guess I'm Falling in Love" is a simple yet effective expression of the intoxicating power of romantic attraction, conveyed through sparse yet evocative lyrics and a driving rock and roll beat.

The instrumental studio audio originally appeared on the CD 'Another View' (1986), which has two more "instrumental" studio outtakes: 'I'm Gonna Move Right In' and 'Ride Into the Sun'.
Instrumentals which in fact have been performed with vocals. Can you make mixes of all three?

I'm Gonna Move Right In (vocals) (live)

Unreleased? "Boston Tea Party January 10, 1969", according to one of the comments.

Ride Into the Sun (vocals) (studio)

Released? If I'm not mistaken, this is the still rare version from the obscure 3CD 'What Goes On' (1993). My favourite.

The simple, straight ahead stuff really showcases how good Tucker and Morrison were. Incidentally, they went to the same HS in Levittown, graduating two years apart. I'm sure that the school has an auditorium for assemblies and live performances. If the people in charge (of the school or school district), had any class they would name it Morrison-Tucker auditorium/ theatre/ hall, after the two of them. The would invite Mo Tucker, and Martha Morrison to the renaming, in proper keeping with the occasion. Of course this will never happen.
