I'm Set Free
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've been set free and I've been bound
To the memories of yesterday's clouds
I've been set free and I've been bound

And now I'm set free
I'm set free
I'm set free to find a new illusion
I've been blinded but
You I can see
What in the world has happened to me?
The prince of stories who walks right by me

And now I'm set free
I'm set free
I'm set free to find a new illusion

I've been set free and I've been bound
Let me tell you people what I found
I saw my head laughing, rolling on the ground

And now I'm set free

I'm set free
I'm set free to find a new illusion

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to The Velvet Underground's "I'm Set Free" seem to be a reflection on the freedom that comes from leaving one's past behind. The repeated phrase "I've been set free and I've been bound" suggests that the singer is caught between two states of being: one in which they're released from the past, and another in which they're still bound to the memories and experiences that form their history. The phrase "to the memories of yesterday's clouds" paints the image of the past being as fleeting and transitory as clouds in the sky, and yet still having the power to shape one's present.

Despite the sense of being trapped between two states, the singer's ultimate conclusion is one of freedom: "And now I'm set free / I'm set free / I'm set free to find a new illusion." The repetition of the phrase "I'm set free" suggests a sense of relief or liberation, but the idea of finding a new illusion suggests that the singer is aware that freedom isn't necessarily a fixed or permanent state. Rather, it's something that one has to seek out and create for oneself.

The final lines of the song provide a surreal and almost absurdist image, with the singer seeing their own head "laughing, rolling on the ground." This could be interpreted as a sort of metaphorical "detachment" from one's own identity or ego, allowing the singer to fully embrace a sense of freedom and possibility.

The guitar solo in this sounds like any modern day indie/alternative band. It's incredible how far ahead of their time they were at times.

@9 lettere you make a good point!

@Smechulock Reehimbe I care what he thinks! I just feel he should be more open to non-standard 'ironic' solos. I dont want his experience, his love of the song, to be marred by something that, im time, he may come to see as original and brilliant. I think being agressive is a bit silly here. It's an odd solo and a legitimate talking point.

Jamie Macfadyen

Could you refrain from insulting this song by claiming it's like an Indie song today or ahead of it's time? It happens to be outside the dimension of time. It walks in eternal lines and it's far better than Indie today.

Jamie Macfadyen

@All Things Croatia hi, its because the solo is deeply ironic. It's like the last death throes of a bumble bee.
