Inside Your Heart
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody shut the door
I know where temptation lies
Inside of you heart
You can talk during this

I know where the evil lies
Inside of your heart
Well get out of here
If you're gonna try to make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong
Wrong wrong wrong wrong
Ah!
That's the only chord I know
I know where the mirror's edge
Is inside of your heart
Motown
It's no even within five feet
Well if you're gonna make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong
You don't look like Martha and the Vandellas
I'm just gonna start it all over again

Somebody get her out of here
Electricity comes from other planets
(It's not that a bad solo. Four times is pretty together)
(You can stay here)

I know where temptation lies
Inside of your heart
Yes he's ready
I know where the evil lies
Inside of your heart
Is he ready
Well if you're gonna make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong

Oh the whole mess start again
Well New York buildings are very hight
And not all offensive
Lock the door
Gonna carry on at infinite leght, my dear
The Pope in the silver castle

Was that awful
Hey, that's fine. That's it

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Velvet Underground's song "Inside Your Heart" seem to allude to the concept of temptation and evil residing within oneself. The opening line, "Somebody shut the door," may be interpreted as a call to shut out the outside world with its distractions and influences, which may lead one towards destructive paths. Instead, one must confront their own inner demons, as "temptation lies inside your heart" and "the evil lies inside of your heart".

The singer warns against attempting to "make it right" as it will only lead to failure and ending up "wrong wrong wrong wrong". Maybe, the singer is suggesting that the solution to inner turmoil cannot be sought outside and one must deal with it within. The line, "I know where the mirror's edge is inside of your heart," possibly refers to the stark introspection that one must do to understand their inner self.

The song's lyrics are cryptic and somewhat abstract, making it open to interpretation. The chorus repeats that the root of all things immoral and unholy is in oneself, which can be a hard pill to swallow. The lyrics may describe a personal struggle to confront feelings of desire that may lead one down an immoral path.

I still can remember the look on my 6th grade science teacher's face when I claimed electricity came from other planets.I had a tantrum, screaming"but Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground said so".Got stood in the corner, repeating it like a mantra. They never pressed the issue of parent-teacher meetings much.
