Lisa Says
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Lisa says that it's all right
When she meets me at midnight
Lisa says that she has her fun
And she'll do it with just about anyone

Lisa says
Lisa says
Lisa says
Lisa says

Lisa says that she's on the run
Looking for a special one
Lisa says that every time she makes it straight
She knows her heart will break

Lisa says
Lisa says
Lisa says
Lisa says

Looking for a party, some action
Gone to make it feel okay
But what do you mind, where the time must come on down
Look at it all

Lisa says
Lisa says
Lisa says
Oh, Lisa says
Lisa says, oh

Overall Meaning

The Velvet Underground's song Lisa Says is a reflective commentary on free-spirited women of the 60s who were known for their non-conformist attitude towards sex and societal norms. The lyrics go like "Lisa says that it's all right, when she meets me at midnight, Lisa says that she has her fun, and she'll do it with just about anyone", implying Lisa's promiscuousness and her lack of traditional morality. The mention of Lisa being on the run and looking for a special one suggests that she is romantically unfulfilled and constantly seeking a partner that is true to her free-spirited nature. However, every time she manages to find someone, she knows it will eventually end in heartbreak, betokening a deeper melancholic undertone to the song.

The recurring "Lisa says" line in the song serves as a reminder of the singer's fascination with Lisa's elusive personality, as well as a device to highlight the contrast between Lisa's free-spiritedness and the singer's more cautious and reliable nature. The musical arrangement is minimalistic, featuring a simple guitar riff, sparse percussion, and Lou Reed's detached vocals that further entrench the song's introspective mood.

It's telling that with the passing of time Reed's songs create a little place of heaven to anyone who basks in them.

What magnificent experiences and encounters must have a man made, to write this masterpiece? Rithm, lyrics, mood. Lou, you are one metropolitan poet. RIP.

I occasionally listen to the trio...Lisa Says, Candy Says, and Stephanie Says....best songs about women (and even a trans woman in an age where it was even more of a burden than now). Lou was a genius and, I think, a very compassionate and understanding person (with a harsh exterior, haha).
