Ocean
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the shore
Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the sea

Insects are evil thoughts, thought of by selfish men
Nearly drives me crazy
I am a lazy son
And I never get things done
'Cause we're made up of water but

Here comes the wave
Down by the shore
Washing the eye of our land
That has been down by the sea
Way down by the sea, down by the shore
Way down by the sea

Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the shore
Here comes the ocean
And the waves down by the sea

Insects are evil thoughts, thought of by selfish men
It nearly drives me crazy
Now I am a lazy son
I never get things done
'Cause we're made up of water but

Here comes the wave
Down by the shore
Washing the eye of our land
That has been down by the shore
Way down by the sea
Down by the shore
Down by the sea

Here come the waves

Here come the waves

Here come the waves

Here come the waves

Here come the waves

Thank you

Overall Meaning

The Velvet Underground's "Ocean" is a song about the power of nature, specifically about the ocean and the waves that it creates. The song opens with the singer observing the ocean and waves, reminding the listener of their might and force. The second verse alludes to the idea that insects are the manifestation of evil thoughts, which nearly drives the singer to insanity. The bridge of the song returns to the power of the ocean and its ability to wash away and cleanse the land (represented by "the eye of our land") by the pounding waves. The song ends with a repetition of the phrase "Here comes the waves," further cementing the idea that the ocean and its waves are an unstoppable force of nature.

When the Velvets start a jam session, you want to continue forever; it's literally obsessive! Greatest rock band ever, hands down.

@Sentient Hotdog yes I did misspell it. Thank you for that.

Sentient Hotdog

@Millerman No. No one has heard of Led Zeppelin. Also, you're welcome for correct spelling.

@Millerman Sorry but you didn't get it. Led Zeppelin were excellent at what they were doing. The Velvet Underground is two bands/categories in itself: studio albums, then live versions. Very different story.

Bob Judd

@Millerman Zeppelin was heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground. Zeppelin played American Blues and Velvets did something totally unique and influenced an entire subculture of new music. Velvets changed rock forever. Zeppelin was a great rock band, not so innovative, IMHO.

Over time this has become my favorite VU song, Lou's voice is unbelievably powerful

And there's quite a few pretty different versions to listen to as well. Ive always loved this song. I remember when I was a kid and that peel slowly and see box set came out. There was so much quality material in there and the audio was pretty good considering. Wrap your troubles in dreams, countess from Hong Kong, etc. Just alot of shit I hadn't heard yet at the time. Also if I recall there was a live some kinda love that was like 15 minutes long, and it was a scorcher to boot. The VU and Lou are STILL underappreciated imho. Idc about the recognition they got later, they deserved more.

A complete masterpiece. Nothing compares to the raw energy, and spirit of VU jams.
