Run Run Run )
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Teenage Mary said to Uncle Dave
I sold my soul, must be saved
Gonna take a walk down to Union Square
You never know who you're gonna find there
You gotta run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do
Marguerita Passion had to get her fix
She wasn't well, she was getting sick
Went to sell her soul, she wasn't high
Didn't know, thinks she could buy it
And she would run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do
Seasick Sarah had a golden nose
Hobnail boots wrapped around her toes
When she turned blue, all the angels screamed
They didn't know, they couldn't make the scene
She had to run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run
Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do
Beardless Harry, what a waste
Couldn't even get a small town taste
Rode the trolleys down to forty seven
Figured he was good to get himself to heaven
'Cause he had to run, run, run, run, run
Take a drag or two
Run, run, run, run, run

Gypsy Death and you
Tell you whatcha do

Overall Meaning

The Velvet Underground's song "Run Run Run" portrays a group of desperate individuals who turn to drug use as a means of escape. The lyrics introduce four characters: Teenage Mary, Marguerita Passion, Seasick Sarah, and Beardless Harry. All of them, in one way or another, seek to find solace in drugs, but the drugs ultimately lead them towards destruction, represented by the "Gypsy Death" in the song's title.

The lyrics use short phrases and repetition to build a sense of urgency and restlessness, paralleling the characters' desire to escape their reality. Teenage Mary sold her soul and is now wandering towards Union Square, leaving open the possibility of meeting new people, who could possibly change her fate. Marguerita Passion, who is not feeling well, is trying to buy some drugs to alleviate her symptoms, but will inevitably fall under the spell of addiction. Seasick Sarah is already sick and taking drugs that will eventually lead her to a lethal consequence. Beardless Harry seems the most tragic of all, as he dreams of some form of redemption but can't escape his dreary fate.

The repeated phrase "Gypsy Death and you" suggests that the drug use will ultimately lead to an undesirable ending. The song portrays the desperation of those who turn to drug use, as they cling to the hope that it will provide an escape, while trapped in an unending cycle of addiction and destruction.

lou refers here to rockers such as this one. many of his ballads were quite 'jazzy'. i saw the feelies cover 'run' live at this awful club, the peppermint lounge. they shld've recorded their version, it was pretty interesting.

Simply the most honest rock n roll band ever. Called it as they saw it

@curlytoes22

you know it's a Lou Reed song if every verse is a short story about a different person

@harrycoyle4529

Dylan did it first. He ran on the same streets too but managed to avoid becoming a junkie.

@eccoakadicco

@@harrycoyle4529 If Dylan was a junkie, I'd bet his music would be less lame and more palatable.
