Temptation Inside Your Heart
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Somebody shut the door
I know where temptation lies
Inside of you heart
You can talk during this

I know where the evil lies
Inside of your heart
Well get out of here

If you're gonna try to make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong
Wrong wrong wrong wrong
Ah!

That's the only chord I know
I know where the mirror's edge
Is inside of your heart
Motown

It's no even within five feet
Well if you're gonna make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong
You don't look like Martha and the Vandellas
I'm just gonna start it all over again

Somebody get her out of here
Electricity comes from other planets
(It's not that a bad solo. Four times is pretty together)
(You can stay here)

I know where temptation lies
Inside of your heart
Yes he's ready

I know where the evil lies
Inside of your heart
Is he ready

Well if you're gonna make it right
You're surely gonna end up wrong

Oh the hole mess start again
Well New York buildings are very height
And not all offensive
Lock the door

Gonna carry on at infinite light, my dear
The Pope in the silver castle

Was that awful.
Hey, that's fine. That's it.

Overall Meaning

The Velvet Underground's song "Temptation Inside Your Heart" is a bit of a puzzling tune, with lyrics that don't seem to make much sense on the surface. The opening lines, "Somebody shut the door, I know where temptation lies, inside of your heart", suggest a desire for privacy and secrecy, as well as an understanding of the inner demons that can drive a person to do things they know are wrong. The repetition of the phrase "I know where the evil lies, inside of your heart" reinforces this idea, while the admonition to "get out of here" suggests a desire to escape from temptation.

The second stanza brings in a note of caution, warning that "if you're gonna try to make it right, you're surely gonna end up wrong". This could be interpreted as advice against trying to resist temptation altogether, or perhaps as a warning against the dangers of half-measures or indecisiveness. The repeated "wrong wrong wrong" reinforces the idea that trying to do the right thing can often lead to unforeseen consequences or unintended outcomes.

The final stanza is a bit more cryptic, with references to Motown, Martha and the Vandellas, and the Pope in a silver castle. These non sequiturs could be interpreted as indicating a sense of confusion or chaos, or perhaps a desire to escape from reality altogether. Ultimately, the song seems to be about the struggle to resist temptation and live up to an ideal in a world that often seems to conspire against us.

I still can remember the look on my 6th grade science teacher's face when I claimed electricity came from other planets.I had a tantrum, screaming"but Lou Reed and the Velvet Underground said so".Got stood in the corner, repeating it like a mantra. They never pressed the issue of parent-teacher meetings much.
