Venus in Furs
The Velvet Underground Lyrics

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girl child in the dark
Comes in bells, your servant, don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Downy sins of streetlight fancies
Chase the costumes she shall wear
Ermine furs adorn the imperious
Severin, Severin awaits you there
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Severin, Severin, speak so slightly
Severin, down on your bended knee
Taste the whip, in love not given lightly
Taste the whip, now bleed for me

I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears

Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girl child in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart

Not the greatest musicians (with the exception of John Cale of course), nor the greatest singers, but goddamn did they write some absolutely brilliant music! Their sound was like nothing else at the time. Sure there were many other avant-garde artists creating brilliant music around the same time, but the Velvet Underground pushed the envelope and created something unique and profound.

I'll take Lou Reed's songwriting and lyrics, John Cale's arrangements, Nico's unbridled passion and raw emotion, culminating in a truly revolutionary vision.

I'll take the Velvet Underground over technique and theory Evey single time!

"Venus in furs" is a novel by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. The term "masochist" was named after Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. "Severin" is the male hero of the novel (written by Leopold Von Sacher-Masoch). FYI the term “Sadism” is derived from the name of Marquis de Sade.
"Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather
Whiplash girlchild in the dark
Severin, your servant comes in bells, please don't forsake him
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart.
Kiss the boot of shiny, shiny leather
Shiny leather in the dark
Tongue of thongs, the belt that does await you
Strike, dear mistress, and cure his heart .
I am tired, I am weary
I could sleep for a thousand years
A thousand dreams that would awake me
Different colors made of tears ."
Listening to the song while reading the novel is a unique experience.

Splendid ! One of my favorite songs from The Velvet Underground. A great song inspired by a great book from Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. Thanks a lot, Hernan Melgarejo, for the sharing of this video !

In 1982, Brian Eno said that while the album (The Velvet Underground & Nico) sold only 30,000 copies in its early years, "everyone who bought one of those 30,000 copies started a band."

Why do people feel compelled to repeat this sobriquet each time VU is mentioned. Obviously, someone was the first to say it but why blame poor Eno?

The guitar vs. violin in this song feels out of time. It's almost old world, yet veers into into the late sixties rock, but more intense. In other words, it drove its point home, but doesn't remember how it got there.

Lee Heidhues

I bought one of those 30,000 copies. I still listen to the album 54 years later.
