I believe this was The Ventures' first instrumental track ever, recorded just before "Walk Don't Run" at a tiny basement studio in Seattle. The guys actually play a bit better than they did on most of their LPs: you can hear the distinct Chuck Berry/rockabilly/ proto-surf sounds. (I don't think you can surf on Puget Sound!) Rick Derringer (ne Zehringer) has said this was the first 45 he ever bought back in Western Ohio; he obviously liked this track better than the mega-hit on the A-side so much that he picked up the guitar just to learn it. I also like it because that little home studio (where "Come Softly To Me" was cut as well) didn''t have a lot of room, so the guitars had to be very closely mic'd to pick up. Fun fact: When The McCoys were rushed (and I mean rushed!) to NYC for :Sloopy", Rick and his brother Randy (he played bass) still had that clunky German name. Bang Records' logo was a tiny pistol- a derringer!- with a flag reading "BANG!" out the barrel. So...Rick Derringer!

Jim Harrington Sr.

Couple corrections; Rick’s Mom’s brother, Uncle Jim taught Rick to play when he was young. Brother Randy played the drums. Rick’s neighbor got a bass, Rick taught him to play, yes, The McCoy. So yes, hence the name.

Damnit Jim, I’m a Doctor, not a Ventures song! 😆
