Catching the Butterfly
The Verve Lyrics
As though you were born
And so you thought
The future's ours
To keep and hold
A child within
Has healing ways
It sees me through
My darkest days
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
In my lucid dreams
In my lucid dreams
Something now
Through life no fun
I want to feel
I want to run
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
In my lucid dreams
In my lucid dreams
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In my private dreams
In my private dreams
In my private dreams
My lucid dreams
My forgotten schemes
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
Be with me
Be with me
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
To be in your eyes
To be in your eyes

The band was formed in 1989 at Winstanley College, Wigan, Greater Manchester, England, by vocalist Richard Ashcroft, guitarist Nick McCabe, bassist Simon Jones and drummer Peter Salisbury. Simon Tong later became a member. The band originally split in 1995, but reunited in 1996 to great commercial success. They split once more in April 1999. The band reunited once more in June of 2007, but this reunion was short lived, despite the release of the album Forth in 2008, and the band split again in August 2009.
Beginning with a psychedelic sound indebted to space rock and shoegazer music, by the mid-1990s the band had released several EPs and two acclaimed records. They also endured name and lineup changes, breakups, health problems, drug abuse and various lawsuits. The band's commercial breakthrough was Urban Hymns and its single Bitter Sweet Symphony, which became a massive worldwide hit.
Soon after this commercial peak, the band quit amid creative struggles within, and Ashcroft went onto a successful solo career. Tong briefly joined Blur as a replacement for Graham Coxon. It is rumored that Simon Jones did a studio album with Ari Pap of the Floor Monks called 'Aint Nothing To It' and was never released because they both had bigger projects going on at the time. Close family and friends assure us its a fabulous indie/rock/alternate album and they really wish it would have been released.
The Verve were chosen to close the 2008 Glastonbury festival which they did with a set based on the classic 1997 album 'Urban Hymns'.

Lyrics
So you're born and
So you thought
The future's ours
To keep and hold
Oh, child within
Has healing ways
It sees her through
My darkest days
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Oh-oh-oh, in my elusive dreams
Oh-oh-oh, in my elusive dreams
Some may know
Through life no fun
I wanna feel
I wanna run
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
I'm gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Oh-oh-oh, in my elusive dreams
Oh-oh-oh, in my elusive dreams
Gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Gonna keep catching that butterfly
In that dream of mine
Oh-oh-oh, in my darkest dream
Oh-oh-oh, in my darkest dream
Oh-oh-oh, in my darkest dream
Oh-oh-oh, in my darkest dream
My elusive dreams
My forgotten schemes
My elusive dreams
My forgotten schemes
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
Believe in me
Believe in you
Believe in me
Believe in you
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
I see through you
You see through me
To feel the light
To feel the light
To feel alive
To feel alive
Oh, that elusive dream

I bought this album because of Symphony when I was 11. I thought I was buying it for that song, but I was VERY wrong. I remember as a 12 year old wandering some trails by myself in a national forest in northern Michigan listening to the whole album and being, for the first time, psychedelically blown away, especially by this song as I watched the drips drop down from and endless forest of green leaves. I had just read Tolkien's Silmarillion and between that and this track (with the others on the ablum) I was more full of 'what if' questions then any time in my life to that point. An awakening

Nice to know I'm not the only one who fell down that rabbit hole all those years ago, this song on repeat whilst consuming a few balloons with the volcano is a great way to spend a happy afternoon.

Good story and I've had similar experiences. Really just replying because I'm from the UP in Michigan lol.

I've had experiences like that listening to this album while cycling. It's beautiful.

Very similar story,
Although I was Manchester England and Richards mum taught me at school as Wigan was only 30 minutes drive from my old school.
Full album was mint.
Bought for bitter sweet symphony and lucky man.
Happy when I found catching that butterfly and sonnet on there not to mention the rest of the album.
Historic album from Richard ashcroft and the gang.

Amazing. I never thought of this song connecting with the Silmarilion, but I do now.
The Silmarillion's a masterpiece, just as this song is.
To find beauty in life whether it's by the word or done musically is an incredibly good gift.

This album is what happens when talented people have a moment of pure magic. It's only possible perhaps once in a life time no matter how talented a person is. Everything must be aligned perfectly and the timing needs to be just right. So many have tried to replicate the magic of a former time in their life believing it was due to their ability, only to discover that it was actually a moment of natural magic never to be repeated.

@RuDuffEnough WellRu Nah - there's only one peak.

It's called inspiration. It's something that acts like thought but it just isn't yours. People's egos get wrapped up into a moment of inspiration and confuse it with their own works. Call it magic, call it God's devine influence or a manifestation of the collective consciousness through a single point. It really doesn't matter. I've had many of these and I'm just waiting for that moment when to pull the trigger on them. Think back on yours and figure out how they can be done.

Northern soul is as good if not better 🤷🏼♂️
