FEEL
The Verve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

This darkness cooled my light
We move to different sides
I poured the guilt right over my eyes
As I rose to greet the sky

I've never felt this before
See you dead on the floor
I can't recall a single day
That's gonna make this pain slip away

My senses have been so cold
Didn't know how to feel or hold
For a second I felt something in you
For a second I believed in you

And I want to know
And I want to be
And I want to feel

And I want to know
And I want to be
And I want to feel

And I want to know
And I want to be
And I want to feel

And I want to know
And I want to be
And I want to feel

We could, my friend
We can
We could, my friend
We can
We should not end
I want to be part of...

And I want to know

And I want to be
And I want to feel

Overall Meaning

In The Verve's song Feel, the lyrics describe a struggle to feel emotions and a longing for connection. The opening lines suggest that the singer has experienced a loss that has affected their ability to shine ("This darkness cooled my light"). The line "We move to different sides" could refer to a relationship or friendship that has turned sour, or it could symbolize the singer's own emotional distance from others.

The following lines are particularly bleak - "I poured the guilt right over my eyes / As I rose to greet the sky." This implies that the singer feels responsible for their own pain and is trying to move past it by "rising" or looking towards the future. However, it seems that the pain is still very present, as the next lines describe the singer's desire for revenge: "See you dead on the floor / I can't recall a single day / That's gonna make this pain slip away."

The pre-chorus ("My senses have been so cold...") describes a sort of emotional numbness that the singer has been experiencing. The second half of the pre-chorus introduces a glimmer of hope, as the singer briefly feels a connection to someone else ("For a second I felt something in you / For a second I believed in you"). The chorus repeats the title phrase - "And I want to know / And I want to be / And I want to feel" - which seems to express the singer's desire for human connection and emotional fulfillment.

Overall, Feel is a song about the struggle to feel emotions and the search for connection in the midst of emotional pain. The lyrics are full of raw, visceral emotion and paint a vivid picture of a person trying to navigate their way through difficult circumstances.

I remember back in the early 94-95ish reading in alternative press magazine how these songs would go on for like 20 minutes while they jammed. I would give anything to hear "Feel" and "Starsail" in full length. They both trail off into a slow fade, but you have to imagine that they must have played out for so much longer. What a trip it would be to actually hear those lost, but more than likely stored tracks in some vault somewhere that drifted on for 20 minutes or more. Music does not exist like this any longer and I am so glad I had my college radio tuned in back in 1992 or who knows, All of this beauty would have passed me by and the memories never made. And whoever can get "A Man Called Sun" live in NewYork video back online it would be much appreciated. The Verve rolling down the street in the back of a trailer, jamming at who knows what hour, captures the essence perfectly & the feel of the time. It was online for a couple of years and just recently disappeared. PLEASE..If Anyone has it and can post it please do. I can only speculate that it was taken down due to copyright laws, or perhaps RA. Either way, Thanks Verve for putting my memories to music. My life would not be the same without your talent.

Excellent idea about their extended jams, I would also like to hear their studio outtakes/demos, Nick McCabe (in)famously never played the same thing twice! #TheVerve
