Lucky Man
The Verve Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just where I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

Well, I'm a lucky man
With fire in my hands

Happiness
Something in my own place
I'm stood here naked
Smiling, I feel no disgrace
With who I am

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know just who I am

But how many corners do I have to turn?
How many times do I have to learn
All the love I have is in my mind?

I hope you understand
I hope you understand
Oh, no no no no no no no no no
Gotta love that'll never die

Happiness
More or less
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty

Happiness
Coming and going
I watch you look at me
Watch my fever growing
I know
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Gotta love that'll never dies
Gotta love that'll never died
No, no
I'm a lucky man

It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty
Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my
It's just a change in me
Something in my liberty

Oh, my, my
Oh, my, my

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to the song Lucky Man by The Verve convey the idea that happiness is not an external factor but an internal one. The lead singer expresses that he has found contentment within himself; a happiness that is not dependent on anything else but his state of mind. He believes that the love he has is within his own mind, and that despite the challenges he encounters, he is a lucky man with fire in his hands. The song's chorus reinforces this message of self-awareness and acceptance, as he muses on the idea that happiness is a change within himself, something in his liberty that has shifted.

The lyrics also suggest that the lead singer is comfortable with who he is, and he feels no shame in being himself. He is naked and smiling, free to be himself, and no one can take that away from him. The idea that he is a lucky man is reiterated throughout the song, signifying that he understands how fortunate he is to have found this type of happiness and contentment.

Overall, Lucky Man is a song about self-awareness, self-acceptance, and the search for true contentment. It is a reminder that the key to finding happiness lies within oneself, and that external factors cannot bring lasting joy.

I was 32 when this brilliant masterpiece was released. One month after a horrible drug overdose. This song was key instrumental in my recovery, and continues to be to this day. 24 years drug free, and definitely a Lucky Man !
